Cyber Monday Blowout: $1 Billion in Sales for First Time

(Dec. 1) -- If the office seemed a little slow on Monday, now you know why. Online shoppers spent $1.028 billion on Cyber Monday with half of all orders flowing in from work computers, according to the digital marketplace analysts comScore. That's the first time Cyber Monday sales have reached the billion-dollar threshold, according to CNN. The figure represents a 16 percent increase from last year's Cyber Monday and significantly outshines the $648 million consumers spent on Black Friday this year, according to comScore's numbers. What's more, according to comScore, the Monday after ...

Black Friday Data Hint at More Confidence in the Economy

While the television images showed Black Friday shoppers in the customary frenzy that has become almost traditional for the day after Thanksgiving, it remains to be seen whether Americans are really ready to believe that the recession is over. ShopperTrak, which compiles retail data, reported that retail sales for Black Friday were a mere 0.3 percent higher than last year. But the number of people visiting the stores rose by 2.2 percent. The firm said its data "shows early holiday sales and door buster promotions impacted Friday's performance as the company saw some unexpected strength in ...

What Recession? Shoppers Eat Up Black Friday Deals

(Nov. 26) -- For one day at least, you could almost imagine the recession never happened. Millions of the nation's shoppers braved rain and cold to crowd stores while others grabbed online bargains on what could be the busiest Black Friday ever. Early signs pointed to bigger crowds at many stores including Best Buy, Sears, Macy's and Toys R Us, some of which had earlier openings than past years or even round-the-clock hours. Minnesota's Mall of America and mall operators Taubman Centers Inc. and Macerich Co. also reported more customers than last year. But the most encouraging sign for ...

Black Friday Shoppers Hope Early Bird Gets the Worm

(Nov. 26) -- Bargain shoppers, braving rain or frigid weather, crowded the nation's stores and malls in the wee hours of the night to get their hands on deals from TVs to toys on Black Friday. In a bid to grab shoppers earlier on the traditional start to the holiday shopping season, a number of stores including Old Navy, Toys R Us and Sears opened on Thursday's Thanksgiving holiday. Toys R Us was counting on getting an extra boost by opening 24 hours straight, starting at 10 p.m. on Thanksgiving. Patricia Lopez, 32, a receptionist from Queens, N.Y., was in line at the Toys R Us in New York's ...

Thanksgiving Sales Bring Shoppers, Grumbles

NEW YORK (Nov. 25) - Not all Americans tucked into turkey with their families on Thanksgiving. Some were out shopping, hitting sales ahead of the crowds expected Friday. After a year of cautious spending and worry over an uncertain economy and high unemployment, more stores this year extended hours into Thanksgiving Day, a day when stores are traditionally closed. Many grumble about the relentless march of commercialism creeping into the holiday. But at least some shoppers took the bait. While crowds appeared relatively light compared with the weekend ahead, the extended hours drew in ...

Pumpkin Pie: Delicious and Good for Facials

(Nov. 25) -- If you're too stuffed to eat your Thanksgiving leftovers this weekend, maybe you should try applying the extra ingredients to your face, body and hair instead. According to skin and beauty expert Stacy Cox, who runs the Pampered People spa in Los Angeles, some Thanksgiving leftovers -- namely pumpkin pie, mashed potatoes and cranberries -- can be used as affordable moisturizing bases for at-home, do-it-yourself skin care treatments. That's right, that leftover pumpkin pie doesn't have to go straight to your hips -- it can go toward beautification instead of bloating. Getty ...

The New Black Friday Safety Protocols, Explained

(Nov. 25) -- The unbridled success of Black Friday retail promotions has inspired a second tradition: gaping at the casualty manifests rolling in on the days that follow. After a temporary Walmart worker was trampled to death last year in Valley Stream, N.Y., the retail industry and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) took the unprecedented step of developing procedural guidelines to keep any more bargain hunters from being trampled, punched, gashed, bitten, kicked, maimed, tackled or shot as they ring in the official start of the Yuletide season. Some of these rules seem ...
