Click here to visit the new home of Politics Daily! It's become fashionable for some conservatives to say that former Congressman Joe Scarborough isn't really "one of us." But Scarborough, host of MSNBC's "Morning Joe," arguably does more to advance conservative ideas than many of the more-celebrated conservative voices in America today. Primarily this is because -- unlike those others -- Scarborough isn't just preaching to the choir. Despite the fact that conservatives now have their own media outlets, like it or not the mainstream media still matter. And as media bias expert Bernard Goldberg has noted, while most reporters have a liberal ...
House Minority Leader John Boehner has two ties to the tobacco industry. He gets a lot of political support and money from it, and he smokes a lot of cigarettes. But putting the political aspect aside, Boehner made one thing clear Sunday: He's not ready to give up the habit. In an unusual twist for one of the Sunday newsmaker shows, politics did in fact take a back seat to the personal, when Bob Schieffer, host of CBS' "Face the Nation," asked Boehner about his smoking and whether he, as a national leader, would give it up "set a good example for the country." Boehner said it's a "bad habit" ...
Republican strategist Ed Rollins on Sunday called RNC Chairman Michael Steele's stewardship of the party "a disaster," saying he has "failed miserably to do the things you're supposed to do: raise money, basically go out and articulate a message." Rollins, who served as national campaign director for Ronald Reagan's 1984 bid and as a former chairman of the National Republican Congressional Committee, made his comments Sunday on "Face the Nation." With the midterm elections bearing down, Rollins said, "what [Steele] says or does in the next 11 weeks is not going to matter" on Election Day, ...
By "win," I don't mean the Little League kind of win (i.e., you're ALL winners!). At Wednesday night's "Karaoke in the Capital," Politics Daily's Editor in Chief Melinda Henneberger bagged the coveted "Don't Quit Your Day Job" Award. We are all so proud. Henneberger and Politics Daily publicist and public relations consultant, Susan Bennett, decided two hours before the show to sing the Pat Benatar song, "Hit Me With Your Best Shot." Waiting in line to go on stage, Henneberger noted with dismay that the first couple of singers were really good. (This is common knowledge to those of us ...
When it comes to presidential debates, I'm normally not a big fan of body-language analysis. You know, that staple of cable television news, when "experts" in the field slice and dice each cough or sigh for symbolic import. Most of the time, you see, our presidential candidates act well within the bounds of commonly acceptable physical comportment, so what we end up with are a bunch of hack pseudo-psychologists telling us why a flip of the hair or a pursing of the lips belied a deep-seated anxiety in candidate x or y. There have been a few notable exceptions along the way: Nixon Vs. Kennedy, ...
