Hours after an employee leaked the jaw-dropping news that Google planned to award $1,000 bonuses and 10 percent raises to all of its employees, the company fired the person responsible for sharing CEO Eric Schmidt's announcement. Google refused to comment on the firing of the as-yet-unidentified employee, CNNMoney reported. "Googlers, you are what makes this company great, and our goal here is to recognize you for your contribution, in a way that's meaningful to you," Schmidt told his workers in an e-mail that was ...
(July 23) -- Pay czar Kenneth Feinberg must feel something like a biblical prophet, except that his job in the Obama administration is more difficult. Ancient sages warned people to do the right thing or face the wrath of the Lord. Feinberg, however, has to bring shame to Wall Street, which is home to many people who don't seem to know what shame is. ...

This editorial by a soon-to-be-former AIG employee at the NYT is getting the buzz of the day at Memorandum, and it's not hard to see why. Jake DeSantis starts out with some context as to how he came to get a $740k bonus and then gets around to his primary beef with the CEO of AIG:I have the utmost respect for the civic duty that you are now performing at A.I.G. You are as blameless for these credit default swap losses as I am. You answered your country's call and you are taking a tremendous beating for it.But you also are aware that most of the employees of your financial products unit had ...
The Senate postponed action on a controversial bill passed by the House last week to retroactively tax bonuses given to executives at companies that received federal bailout money. The measure, which would have taxed the bonuses at 90%, was directed specifically at the troubled AIG Insurance group, but could have snared executives at other financial firms. The move comes after President Barack Obama expressed doubts about the constitutionality of the bill in his 60 minutes interview this past Sunday."I think that as a general proposition, you don't wanna be passing laws that are just targeting ...
With all the outrage coming from the White House over bonuses paid to executives at the troubled AIG Insurance group, the White House might be a bit embarrassed to admit that as a Senator, President Obama took plenty of money from AIG in the form of campaign contributions. According to OpenSecrets.org, Senator Obama was the second largest recipient of campaign dollars from AIG at $101,332. Only Connecticut Senator Chris Dodd (D-CT), Only Connecticut Senator Chris Dodd (D-CT), who, it turns out, is responsible for the loop hole that allowed the bonuses to be paid to AIG executives. For ...
I hate to see anyone getting piled-on mercilessly, much the way AIG has been for the past few days. The piles of giant internet headlines decrying the payment of bonuses and near-riot-stage public outrage need something to balance them out. Admittedly, I went into this looking for a log to throw on the bonfire that I could call my own. My 3 year-old was wearing his Manchester United jersey the other day, emblazoned with the logo of the team's sponsor: AIG. I thought, "Wouldn't it be awesome if AIG was spending bailout money for a spot on a soccer jersey?"I got off to a promising start, as AIG ...
