Their long efforts to get the Mexican man convicted in a U.S. court paid off Tuesday when a federal jury deliberated only two hours to find him guilty of murdering Border Patrol Agent Luis Aguilar at a popular southeastern California campground. Jurors rejected testimony by Navarro that he wasn't even in the marijuana-filled Hummer that struck and killed Aguilar at the Imperial Sand Dunes. Navarro also said he was forced to confess to the crime under ...
ATHENS, Greece -- As the exodus of foreigners and Egyptians continues from Cairo, Greece has beefed up its own border patrols and said today it was considering asking the European Union's force, Frontex, to extend sea patrols to fend off a fresh wave of illegal immigrants hitting Europe. Greece is already grappling with an immigration crisis that has seen more than 128,000 illegals sneak into the country in 2010, the highest influx recorded yet by any European Union member state. Now, fears that the escalating crisis in Egypt could uncork a fresh wave of illegal immigrants coming into ...
(Dec. 17) -- Thousands of federal law enforcement agents work their tails off to put crooks behind bars. But on occasion, some of the very same folks who carry a gun and a badge and slap the cuffs on the bad guys end up stepping over the line. Way over the line. AOL News thought it was worth looking back at some of the more notable of these incidents from 2010: Loose Cash: Steven Campbell, an agent with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, could have at least waited until no one was looking. But no. In October, Campbell caught the attention of some agents during a drug ...
(Dec. 15) -- Authorities continue to search today for a fifth suspect in the death of Border Patrol agent Brian Terry, who was shot during a gun fight late Tuesday night. Terry, 40, and a team of agents were in a remote part of the desert last night trying to track down a group of thieves who were believed to have been stealing from illegal immigrants. Just after 11 p.m., the agents encountered the men in an area north of Nogales, Ariz., known as Peck Canyon, and Terry was killed in the ensuing gunfight. Four of the five men involved in his death have been captured, and the fifth is still on ...
(Dec. 15) -- Authorities in Arizona have four suspects in custody and are hunting for a fifth man after a shootout that killed a U.S. Border Patrol agent near the town of Nogales. Border Patrol Agent Brian Terry was fatally shot Tuesday night after he and other agents encountered a group of suspected bandits in a remote area outside Nogales, near the Mexican border, CNN reported. "Agent Terry's murder is a tragic reminder of the ever-present dangers U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers, Air & Marine and Border Patrol agents face as they protect our nation's borders," U.S. Customs and ...
(Nov. 6) -- Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano has already frozen work on the controversial "virtual fence" that was supposed to secure roughly 1,900 miles along the United States' southwest border. Now, she's expected to announce its cancellation by mid-November. SBInet was supposed to integrate data from radar, cameras and other sensors to create a virtual fence that would alert border patrol agents of attempted illegal entries. But the program has been plagued by cost, schedule and technical problems. Mark Ralston, AFP / Getty Images A U.S. Border Patrol officer keeps watch ...
(Aug. 18) -- California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger announced today that the first batch of California National Guard troops, 224 strong, will be headed to the California-Mexico border on Sept. 1. They will work with border patrol agents to combat illegal immigration and drug, weapons and human trafficking. "Our soldiers and airmen are true action heroes who respond to disasters at home and overseas. Today, our National Guard has been called to help secure the border and protect the safety of the American people, and I am proud that we are the first state to have our troops trained and ...
(Aug. 13) -- President Barack Obama is set to sign a $600 million border security bill today. The legislation was approved by the Senate Thursday and by the House on Tuesday in special August sessions. The money will be raised in part through increased visa fees for foreign personnel companies that bring skilled foreign workers to the U.S. -- with hikes from $320 to as high as $2,750 each, according to the Los Angeles Times. (India is not happy.) The fees will be levied on companies that hire 50 or more foreign workers or have half or more than half of their staff on foreign visas. Here's ...
When the Senate passed a $600 million border security bill Thursday, Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) said one of his goals with the measure was to jump start efforts to pass immigration reform in Congress. Republicans have refused to consider an immigration bill this year, saying the U.S.-Mexico border must be secured before they'd even consider debating the issue. "It's my hope that the bill we're passing today will break the deadlock," he said. But that hope ended moments later, when Sen. John McCain and Sen. Jon Kyl, Arizona's two Republican senators, called the measure "a start" and accused ...
Call it a rare bipartisan moment if you like, but the U.S. House easily approved a $600 million bill Tuesday authorizing more than 1,000 additional border agents and surveillance drones to patrol the border with Mexico. ...
