Click here to visit the new home of Politics Daily! The Obama administration's recent surprise decision to suspend new work on a multibillion-dollar high-tech border control system -- the third attempted since 1997 -- raises further questions about the government's use of computer networks and sensors in an effort to seal the border with Mexico. As part of a broad illegal immigration crackdown called the Secure Border Initiative, a seamless "virtual fence" launched in 2005 was supposed to be up and running by last year. Among other things, the project known as SBInet called for a vast surveillance system along the 2,000-mile Southwestern ...

Federal agents and Mexican officers have been sharing intelligence and working patrols together for the first time in a joint effort to crack down on drug smuggling and illegal immigration, The Los Angeles Times reported. Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano and Mexican Public Safety Secretary Genaro Garcia Luna signed a declaration Thursday in Mexico City that would expand the new partnership between the U.S. Border Patrol and Mexico's federal police that began in recent months. Officials said that eventually joint operations on both sides of the border could lead to the creation ...

The Bush Doctrine stated that unilateral preemptive war was an option for America's national defense, but that's not the only remnant left behind by the previous presidential administration. There's also the Halliburton Doctrine, which states that if you dangerously botch multiple defense and security contracts, as Dick Cheney's former company and its one-time subsidiary KBR did so often, you still get another shot at government money-- often with no other bids solicited. So who's the current beneficiary of the Halliburton Doctrine? That would be the Boeing Corporation...The U.S. Border Patrol ...

After its support for a comprehensive immigration reform bill caused a revolt among conservatives, the White House has stepped up its use of enforcement programs targeting employers who knowingly hire illegal immigrants. It has also sped up the construction of hundreds of miles of border fencing and deployment of high technology to the border to assist the Border Patrol in preventing illegals from entering the country.Democrats can ...
So, apparently as the U.S. economy continues its downward spiral, so do the number of illegal immigrants crossing our borders trying to get to the land of prosperity. It could be a combination of nasty economic conditions and illegal immigrant crackdowns that caused the number of border apprehensions to drop 17 percent to 347,372 from Oct. 1, 2007 to and March 31, 2008, the Wall Street Journal reports today. The U.S. Border Patrol today told Political Machine the number of apprehensions to date since Oct. 1, 2007 is 357,466, nationwide. The Journal reported that the drop was particularly ...
The White House and the Department of Homeland Security are highlighting what the Administration describes as "significant progress" in securing the border. Earlier this week, the Department put out a fact sheet chock full of statistics on fencing, apprehensions, seizures, and arrests. The fact sheet seems intended to counter a Government Accountability Office report from last week that was critical of the Department's efforts on the border.According to the DHS, targeted enforcement programs, increased use of high technology, and staffing increases made U.S. Customs and Border Protection ...
