'Decision Points,' George W. Bush's Memoir, Set for November Release

Former President George W. Bush's highly anticipated memoir will be titled "Decision Points" and will be available Nov. 9, The Associated Press reports. Crown, the publisher, announced the title and revealed the cover for the book on Sunday. Bush has given few interviews about his presidency since leaving office, but has spent nearly every day working on the book, Crown said in a statement. "Decision Points" will not be a traditional memoir, instead fleshing out key decisions in Bush's life and presidency, which the former president chronicles in a "candid" and "personal" tone, according to ...

Federal Court Says War Powers Allow Holding Guantánamo Detainees

The federal appeals court for the D.C. circuit ruled Tuesday that not even international law limits war powers that allow the White House to hold suspected terrorists. The case was the first test of the Supreme Court's landmark 2008 ruling that allowed detainees from Guantánamo Bay and elsewhere to challenge their detention in court. If the high court does not reverse the decision, it could apply to all of the Guantánamo cases, which are being heard in the D.C. circuit. Upholding the decision of a lower court that first heard his case, the appeals panel denied the request of Ghaleb Nassar ...

22 Million Bush Administration E-Mails Recovered

Computer technicians have recovered 22 million e-mails missing from the Bush administration, according to two government transparency groups that filed lawsuits against the Executive Office of the President, the Huffington Post reports. The suits focused on the Bush administration's failure to install an electronic record-keeping system, and the Obama administration is now searching for more messages possibly lost during the Bush years. The e-mails "would never have been found but for our lawsuits and pressure from Capitol Hill," said Anne Weismann, chief counsel for Citizens for ...

22 Million Bush White House E-Mails Found

WASHINGTON (Dec. 15) -- Computer technicians have found 22 million missing White House e-mails from the administration of President George W. Bush, and the Obama administration is searching for dozens more days' worth of potentially lost e-mail from the Bush years, according to two groups that filed suit over the failure by the Bush White House to install an electronic record-keeping system. The two private groups -- Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington and the National Security Archive -- said Monday they were settling the lawsuits they filed against the Executive Office of ...

Help the Children -- It Won't Cost a Thing

Help the Children -- It Won't Cost a Thing

Couldn't we buck that little, loud-mouthed group of religious fear-mongers just once and give children a break? The U.N. Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) will come up for a vote in 2010 or 2011, and the religious right is already getting the bullhorns out. This treaty has been ratified by every nation except the United States and Somalia. We have the late Jesse Helms and the Bush administration to thank for that little piece of shame. ...

Deaths Shine Light on DEA's Hidden War in Afghanistan

WASHINGTON (Nov. 4) -- War and drugs are inextricably linked in Afghanistan. On Oct. 19, a drug bazaar raid in Afghanistan's Kandahar Province uncovered not just drugs but materials for improvised explosive devices -- the weapon of choice for the resurgent Taliban. That raid, details of which have not been previously reported but were confirmed by the U.S. Embassy in Kabul, was carried out by members of a Drug Enforcement Administration paramilitary team, working with U.S. Special Forces and Afghan army counterparts. Such raids can reap great rewards -- an opium lab was destroyed during the ...

Bush Officials Denied Rowling Medal Because Books 'Encouraged Witchcraft'

Former George W. Bush speechwriter Matt Latimer has been making waves and drawing fire the past two weeks with the dishy revelations in his new memoir, "Speech Less: Tales of a White House Survivor." Bush predicted Sarah Palin's crash-and-burn exit and remarked on the size of Hillary Clinton's "keister." But as politicos and bloggers make their way through the book, they're finding even stranger bits, like the news that Bush officials denied British author J.K. Rowling a Presidential Medal of Freedom because her "Harry Potter" books "encouraged witchcraft." The Bush administration also passed ...

Former Speechwriter Says Bush Slammed Obama, Predicted Palin Debacle

Former president George W. Bush had a flair for insulting the people fighting to be his successor, former speechwriter Matt Latimer reveals in the October issue of GQ. The piece, an excerpt from Latimer's forthcoming book, "Speech Less: Tales of a White House Survivor," gives a candid look at the final days of the Bush presidency. In several passages, Bush comments on the candidates then vying for the White House: The president, like me, didn't seem to be in love with any of the available options. He always believed Hillary Clinton would be the Democratic nominee. "Wait till her fat keister ...

Iraqi Shoe-Thrower Released, Says He Was Tortured

Muntadar Al-Zaidi, the Iraqi journalist who flung a pair of shoes at former President George W. Bush, has been released after nine months in prison. His original sentence of three years was eventually reduced to one year, and he was released early for good behavior. In a defiant press conference hours after he emerged from prison, Zaidi defended his behavior and vowed to release the names of military and government officials who he says tortured him. ...

Andrew Sullivan: Only Bush Can Remove 'Stain' of Torture

In a lengthy open letter in the October issue of The Atlantic, Andrew Sullivan calls on President Bush to take responsibility for the torture and military abuses that happened on his watch, and help absolve the nation of its guilt. Sullivan praises Bush's recognition of September 11 as a declaration of war and of terrorism as a serious emerging threat to the West. But, Sullivan says, the U.S. lost its moral high ground. ...
