California

California, the biggest electoral-vote prize in presidential contests, is also one of the most closely watched states in this midterm election. Incumbent Democratic Sen. Barbara Boxer faces GOP challenger Carly Fiorina, former CEO of Hewlett-Packard. Republican Meg Whitman, who headed eBay for 10 years, is running against Democrat Jerry Brown, who served as governor from 1975 to1983, to succeed term-limited GOP Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger. The Golden State has 53 congressional districts, more than any other. Polls show Democrats have a rare opportunity to pick up a pair of House seats held by Republicans – Dan Lungren in the 3rd District and Mary Bono Mack in the 45th District. Obama won California in 2008.
