Economy and Foreclosures Make Latino Voters Moving Targets for Democrats

Economy and Foreclosures Make Latino Voters Moving Targets for Democrats

In 2008, nearly 70 percent of Latino voters supported Barack Obama and helped Democrats expand their majorities in the House and Senate. But two years later, a new survey shows that Hispanic voters are far less motivated than most other Americans to go to the polls, a finding that could have a major impact on key races in California, Nevada, Texas and Florida, where Latinos make up between 15 and 20 percent of registered voters. Leslie Sanchez, president of the Impacto Group and author of "Los Republicanos: Why Hispanics and Republicans Need Each Other," said the the apathy among some Latinos ...

What Is Carly Fiorina's Religion?

Carly Fiorina, the Tea Party-courting former chief executive of Hewlett-Packard, is the Republican nominee for the U.S. Senate from California. She is running against three-term Democratic incumbent Sen. Barbara Boxer. As part of a Politics Daily series providing background about the major candidates in the 2010 midterm elections, here are answers to some frequently asked questions about Fiorina's prepolitical life. What is Carly Fiorina's religion? In an interview with radio talk show host Hugh Hewitt, she said that she was raised Episcopalian and that her husband is a Catholic. ...

Eight Lessons of the 2010 Midterms

Eight Lessons of the 2010 Midterms

Except for a little clean-up duty in Louisiana and Hawaii, the rowdy and random 2010 midterm primary season concluded this week, with more upstarts and upsets. Now, the remaining general election candidates, not to mention the leaders of both major political parties, are trying to discern what in the world the voters are trying to tell them – or whether there even are any coherent messages to be gleaned in this grueling election season. The short answer is that voters are certainly trying to tell the political class a thing or two, but it's not always clear what voters are trying to ...

Is the Tea Party Losing Its Strength?

By  David Corn - Politics Daily
Is the Tea Party Losing Its Strength?

What a surprise: The Tea Party is not as popular as it once was. That was part of the news contained in a Washington Post/ABC News poll released this week. (The other hardly shocking and bad-for-Democrats news: only 29 percent are inclined to vote for their current representative in Congress.) Fifty percent of the respondents said they hold an "unfavorable impression" of this conservative, anti-Obama, anti-government movement -- an increase from 39 percent in March (when the health care reform slugfest was under way). Those with a favorable view dropped from 41 to 36 percent, and those folks ...

California's Tom Campbell: GOP Senate Candidate Who Defies Easy Labeling

California's Tom Campbell: GOP Senate Candidate Who Defies Easy Labeling

In an era of expedient political branding, California's Tom Campbell, a Republican candidate aiming to win Barbara Boxer's U.S. Senate seat, defies labeling. A free-market economist who advocates breaking up big banks, a social liberal with conservative views on immigration, an opponent of the nation's recently passed national health care legislation, he supports repealing the federal antitrust exemption for insurance companies. In polls, Campbell, 57, trails former Hewlett Packard chief executive Carly Fiorina for the nomination but, unlike Fiorina, leads Boxer in a hypothetical matchup. ...

Meg Whitman, Carly Fiorina Regain Footing in California GOP Contests

Former Hewlett-Packard CEO Carly Fiorina and former eBay chief executive Meg Whitman appear to have rebounded in their respective races for the GOP senate and gubernatorial nominations in California, according to a SurveyUSA poll conducted May 21-23. Fiorina, who a recent Public Policy Institute of California survey showed to be in a horserace with former Rep. Tom Campbell, leads in this poll by 46 percent to 23 percent with 14 percent for state Assemblyman Chuck DeVore. Two other candidates share 6 percent and 11 percent are undecided. In the GOP race for governor, Whitman leads state ...

Sarah Palin Endorses Carly Fiorina for California Senate

Republican Carly Fiorina scored a coup Thursday when Sarah Palin endorsed her for the GOP Senate nomination in California. In doing so, Palin bypassed state assemblyman Chuck DeVore, a favorite of conservatives such as Sen. Jim DeMint of South Carolina. In a statement circulated by Fiorina, Palin praised the former Hewlett-Packard CEO as a "commonsense conservative" with the potential to beat the longtime Democratic incumbent, Barbara Boxer. Palin said she is "a huge proponent" of contested primaries, but supports Fiorina "as she fights through a tough primary against a liberal member of the ...

Tea Party Serves Up Trouble for GOP

Tea Party Serves Up Trouble for GOP

It's impossible to say which face of the Tea Party movement should be more worrisome for establishment Republicans. Is it Anthony Flythe, a small-business owner from Bethesda, Md., who warns that the country is headed toward "totalitarian socialism" and points to "tyrants like Hitler and Mao Tse Tung" as examples of rulers he equates to President Obama? Or is it Charlotte Manuel, a Florida senior who drove to Washington with her husband and four friends for her first Tea Party "because we've lost control of our government . . . we heard about the Tax Revolt and the Tea Party Revolt and we ...

Boxer Posts Weak Numbers in Latest California Senate Poll

Three-term Democratic Sen. Barbara Boxer is managing no better than 43 percent in match-ups with her potential Republican rivals and all of her leads are within the margin of error in a Rasmussen Reports poll conducted April 12.
