Last August the teacher, 27-year-old Abby Nurre, who had just been hired to teach eight-grade math at St. Edmond School in Fort Dodge, checked "no" in a Facebook survey about whether she believed in God, heaven and angels. Cardinal Sean O'Malley of Boston says the children of same-sex couples should be welcomed at any church schools in the archdiocese, a position different from that of at least one other prominent bishop in the American hierarchy. "We have never had categories of people who were excluded," O'Malley wrote in a blog post. A Catholic school in Boulder, Colo., has refused to re-enroll a child in its preschool program because the student's parent are lesbians. Officials at Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic School, acting at the direction of the Archdiocese of Denver, last week told faculty members that the child would not be readmitted to the church school because of the sexual orientation of the child's parents.
