Mennonites, Presbyterians Oppose Indiana Immigration Bill (SB 590)

A tough new bill targeting illegal immigrants in Indiana has several faith traditions speaking up in protest. The Elkhart Truth reports that the Mennonite Church USA, which is headquartered in Indiana and represents 939 congregations nationwide, has registered its official opposition to Senate Bill 590. Meanwhile, according to The Indianapolis Star, leaders of the Presbyterian Church have said they will not hold their biannual conference in Indianapolis this summer if SB 590 passes. US Catholics Win Rare Victories on Church Closures

MINERSVILLE, Pa. -- Like many Roman Catholics, Marie Lutkus felt anger, sadness and disillusionment after her beloved church was shut down in a consolidation of parishes. St. Francis of Assisi had been her spiritual home since 1961. It's the place where she was married, where her children and grandchildren were baptized, where she mourned the loss of her parents and brother. So when the doors were locked in 2008, Lutkus couldn't simply let go. Three years later, Lutkus and parishioners at eight other shuttered churches in Pennsylvania's Allentown diocese have persuaded a Vatican panel to ...

Holy Land Beckons Tourists to Path of the Virgin Mary

EIN KAREM, Israel -- Christian tourists have long come to the Holy Land to walk in the footsteps of Jesus. Now they can trace the path of the Virgin Mary as well. "The Holy Land is the homeland of the Virgin Mary, where all the important events in her life took place, and it is only natural to follow a pilgrimage itinerary in her footsteps," said Noaz Bar-Nir, director-general of the Ministry of Tourism. In this picturesque village on the outskirts of Jerusalem, tourists can visit Mary's spring, where Catholic tradition says she stopped to drink water on her way to visit her cousin ...

Pope Is No Tea Partier: Benedict Backs Guaranteed Health Care For All

As newly empowered Republicans prepare a congressional agenda topped by a promise to repeal health care reform, Pope Benedict XVI has strongly reiterated Catholic teaching that universal health care is an "inalienable right" that must be guaranteed by every nation and society. "It is necessary to work with greater commitment at all levels so that the right to health is rendered effective, favoring access to primary health care," Benedict said in a message on Thursday to the 25th annual conference of the Vatican office that promotes health care ministry. "Health justice should be among the ...

Catholic Bishops: More Exorcists Needed

NEW YORK (Nov. 12) -- Citing a shortage of priests who can perform the rite, the nation's Roman Catholic bishops are holding a conference on how to conduct exorcisms. The two-day training, which ends Saturday in Baltimore, is to outline the scriptural basis of evil, instruct clergy on evaluating whether a person is truly possessed, and review the prayers and rituals that comprise an exorcism. Among the speakers will be Cardinal Daniel DiNardo, archbishop of Galveston-Houston, Texas, and a priest-assistant to New York Archbishop Timothy Dolan. "Learning the liturgical rite is not difficult," ...

Atheist Advertising -- or Evangelizing? The Holiday Ad Blitz Starts Early

It's two weeks before Thanksgiving and atheists who have tried to counter the religious reasons for the season with good tidings of godlessness have outdone themselves this year: They've launched publicity campaigns with a bigger ad buy than ever. The largest is a $200,000 effort by the American Humanist Association (AHA) that includes a television spot that aired on NBC's "Dateline" Friday evening as well as other television commercials -- a first for such an organization -- plus advertisements in national and regional print media. This year's AHA campaign differs from last season's more ...

Why Are Women Ditching Democrats?

(Oct. 28) -- The Democratic coalition is crumbling, with women, Catholics and the working class no longer favoring the party, according to a New York Times/CBS News poll. If more women vote for Republicans than Democrats Nov. 2, it will be for the first time since exit polls began measuring the gender split in 1982. The poll shows just how upset Americans are with the government: 57 percent of registered voters say they'd back a candidate with little experience, and 25 percent said they'd vote for someone whose positions "seem extreme." But just what they want politicians to do about it ...

Whose God Rescued the Chilean Miners?

Whose God Rescued the Chilean Miners?

As the dramatic rescue of the 33 Chilean miners trapped more than 2,000 feet underground wound to a happy, indeed miraculous ending, one of the great and emblematic lines of the saga was delivered by a miner who sent a letter up on Tuesday, the day before he made the journey to the surface. "There are actually 34 of us," 19-year-old Jimmy Sanchez wrote, "because God has never left us down here." Amen, a watching world would agree. But now the question has become, exactly whose God was down there with Jimmy Sanchez and the others? Different churches are laying claim to inspiring divine ...
