March Madness: A Hit Everywhere Except the Stands

March Madness: A Hit Everywhere Except the Stands

Sure, Thursday's first round NCAA Tournament games were incredibly entertaining and kept millions of viewers tuned to CBS's TV and online coverage. But when it comes to actual attendance at the arenas ... they were duds. Several venues, including the New Orleans Arena, the Ford Center in Oklahoma City and the HP Pavilion in San Jose, had huge swaths of empty seats, and at Kentucky's game against East Tennessee in New Orleans, the 17,000-seat arena was barely half-full. "Every game we've played on the road has been a sellout," said Kentucky coach John Calipari. "We've had no empty seats until ...

We're ALL Reporters, and We've Redefined News

Associated Press's decision to release a photo of a mortally wounded soldier last month drew criticism from many Americans, including service veterans and Defense Secretary Robert Gates, who, in a scathing letter to the AP's top editor, called the move "appalling." While the photo is graphic, it helps to accurately depict a tragic story in a war filled with violence and death. "AP journalists document world events every day. Afghanistan is no exception," Santiago Lyon, the AP's director of photography, told Politico. "We feel it is our journalistic duty to show the reality of the war there, ...

CBS Having a Good Tournament

The NCAA tournament may be chalk to this point. Advertising money may not have been flowing quite so easily. CBS, though, can take some solace that the NCAA tournament is getting plenty of eyeballs over the air and online.According to CBS Sports, the TV ratings for the first two rounds are up six percent from last year while the online viewing is up a whopping 60 percent with some 5.6 million unique visitors. The amount of time people spent watching the games online is also up nearly 71 percent from last year. The decision by CBS to go with Microsoft's Silverlight technology to improve the ...

Could March Madness Leave CBS?

Could March Madness Leave CBS?

CBS has held the television rights to the NCAA Tournament since 1982. CBS has paid handsomely for them over the years. The most recent extension was for $6 billion over 11 years that runs through 2013. CBS smartly included digital media rights -- which includes the streaming of the games over the internet. This has created a new revenue stream for CBS. And as it has invested in and improved the live streams, CBS has seen its ad revenue grow from it. This year, CBS expects ad revenue from the online streaming to be around $30 million, an almost 30 percent increase from last year in spite of the ...

Most People Who Watched the NCAA Tournament Online Did It at Work

CBS Sports is gearing up for the NCAA Tournament. That includes their popular March Madness On Demand online streaming video service. Arguably it would be useful to watch out-of-market games in your area. Especially, for example, if you went to a Big East school and live in a Big Ten market. The reality, is that it was primarily utilized by people at work. According to CBS, about 90% of the online viewership were at-work viewers. This, of course, shocks no one. It merely confirms the assumptions, and makes it increasingly likely that network administrators will be attempting to block the site ...

Random Thoughts on Auburn's Game With LSU This Saturday

Random Thoughts on Auburn's Game With LSU This Saturday

It's only Monday and this weekend's showdown with LSU already feels enormous. I can only imagine what things will be like on Friday. I'm glad I graduated years ago. I probably wouldn't be in class much this week... Our article, Auburn Turns Attention To Bayou Trash, was named the Headline of the Week by Sports Illustrated. That's a cool honor. Be sure to check it out... I still can't believe CBS Sports has chosen the Florida-Tennessee game as its primetime telecast. I guess Auburn's number three ranking and LSU's number six ranking wasn't good enough. Some argue that the ratings are higher ...
