For New Air Force Bomber, Pilot May Be Optional

(Sept. 15) -- The iconic Dr. Strangelove image of the trigger-happy bomber pilot might be moving a step closer to extinction, at least if an influential think tank has its way. The Washington-based Center for Strategic and Budgetary Assessments says in a newly released report that the Air Force should consider buying a fleet of new bombers that could operate with -- or without -- a pilot. "Sixty-six to one hundred new bombers would give DoD a sizable capacity for conducting penetrating long-range strikes compared to today's relatively small B-2 force," said the report, which was released ...
