Gov't Seeks to Limit Junk Food Ads to Kids

WASHINGTON -- The Obama administration is planning to ask food companies and restaurants to cut back on advertising unhealthy foods to children. Under guidelines obtained by The Associated Press, companies would be urged only to market foods to children ages 2 through 17 if they are low in fats, sugars and sodium and contain specified healthy ingredients. The government is planning to propose the voluntary guidelines Thursday, according to three people familiar with the process who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly. The guidelines set ...

How a Government Shutdown Would Affect Americans

You'd still get your mail -- and your usual Social Security payment. But troops' pay might be delayed, and you'd have to put off that spring break trip to a national park. How government services would or wouldn't be affected if there's a partial shutdown Friday at midnight: • Benefit payments: Social Security payments would continue, and applications would still be processed. Unemployment benefits would still go out. Medicare would still pay claims for recipients, but payments to doctors and hospitals could be delayed if the shutdown were prolonged. • Mail: Deliveries as ...

Opinion: The Health of Our Children Is in Your Hands

In July, a close friend asked me to join him at a meeting for a new foundation with the mission to combat childhood obesity. As the mother of three young boys, I was acutely aware of the exponential growth in obesity-related illnesses among America's children and had been closely watching the first lady's initiative, Let's Move, which aims to end childhood obesity within a generation. The more I learned about this epidemic the more determined I became to get involved. Since that introductory meeting, I have immersed myself in learning more about childhood obesity -- having extensive ...

Ten Percent of American Kids Have ADHD, Survey Finds

(Nov. 11) -- It's a problem that appears to be getting worse. Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, ADHD for short, is on the rise in the United States, with one in 10 children in the country being diagnosed with the neurological condition at some point, according to figures released by the Centers for Disease Control. The National Survey of Children's Health found that the number of kids age 4 to 17 who reported being diagnosed with ADHD rose from 7.8 percent to 9.5 percent from 2003 to 2007. The disorder is characterized by an inability to concentrate at school, at home or in ...

Egg Recall Expands on Salmonella Fears

WASHINGTON (Aug. 20) -- The nationwide recall of tainted eggs expanded Friday as a second Iowa egg farm was linked to the ongoing investigation of a salmonella outbreak that has already sickened more than 1,000 people. Iowa's Hillandale Farms said Friday it was recalling its eggs after laboratory tests confirmed illnesses associated with them. The company did not say how many eggs were being recalled or if it is connected to Wright County Egg, another Iowa farm that recalled 380 million eggs earlier this week. An FDA spokeswoman said the two recalls are related. The strain of salmonella ...

Egg Recall Expands Again, May Be Nationwide Problem

(Aug. 19) -- An Iowa egg producer has recalled an additional 152 million eggs potentially tainted with salmonella, acknowledging the problem may have spread to virtually all parts of the United States. Wright County Egg of Galt, Iowa, has now recalled 380 million eggs that were shipped to food wholesalers, distribution centers and food-service companies in 17 states. Those companies ship nationwide, the egg producer said in a statement issued Wednesday night. At least 300 people have been reported sickened by eggs, and a food safety expert told AOL News today that the recall "is not a ...

Big Egg Recall Came Despite FDA's New Salmonella Rules

(Aug. 18) -- Millions of eggs have been recalled over concerns of salmonella contamination. While hardly the first such scare, the timing is noteworthy: It comes a month after the Food and Drug Administration started a crackdown on manufacturers meant to prevent just this kind of health hazard. Which eggs are involved in the recall? A grand total of 228 million eggs are being recalled, all of them produced by Wright County Egg. The eggs were sold nationwide under a handful of brand names: Lucerne, Albertson, Mountain Dairy, Ralph's, Boomsma's, Sunshine, Hillandale, Trafficanda, Farm ...

Attorney: Vegetables Likely Culprit in Outbreak Linked to Taco Bell

(Aug. 7) -- An attorney for a nationally known food safety law firm said Saturday that the salmonella outbreak linked to Taco Bells in 21 states is likely the result of vegetables being brought into the stores. "Since the outbreak is so widespread, it's likely that the contamination was on the vegetables when they arrived at the stores and not something that happened while the food was being prepared," attorney Bill Marler of Marler Clark told AOL News. Marler's firm has filed a suit on behalf of a 45-year-old Kentucky mother who said she became ill after eating at a Taco Bell. He said his ...

Dengue Fever Cases Reported in Parts of Florida

(July 24) -- Once almost wiped out by a pesticide no longer in use, dengue fever is rearing its ugly head again in areas of Florida. The disease, which is sometimes called "break-bone fever" for the crushing pain it inflicts, has shown up in some parts of the state, including tourist playground Key West. There also have been a handful of confirmed cases in Central Florida, Orlando NBC affiliate WESH reported this week. That's enough to get health officials worried. US Obesity Rates Stabilizing, Study Says

(Jan. 13) --The good news is that American obesity rates may have plateaued. The bad news is that 68 percent of U.S. adults remain either overweight or obese. Those are the conclusions of a new study published in The Journal of the American Medical Association. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey divided its study into two parts, one that looked at recently gathered body mass index (BMI) statistics for adults and another that focused on children. Justin Sullivan, Getty Images Obesity rates in American adults, though higher ...
