President Obama signed into law a $600 billion border security bill Friday that will beef up surveillance on the U.S.- Mexico border. In a statement released Thursday, the president said the bill will make "an important difference" as his administration "continues to work with Congress toward bipartisan comprehensive immigration reform to secure our borders, and restore responsibility and accountability to our broken immigration system." In a press briefing on Friday, Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano hailed the bipartisan support for the bill and said the new law "demonstrates ...
The crowded Senate calendar got more jammed Thursday as Majority Leader Harry Reid said he would try to get a vote on legislation requiring more disclosure in corporation-financed political ads before the July 4 recess. Sen. Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) said Reid "pledged" that the bill would receive prompt action and "we have designed the proposal so it can take effect by 2010," The Hill Newspaper reported. It is in response to a 5-4 Supreme Court decision in January that lifted most restrictions on campaign commercials produced and paid for by corporations and unions, even when such ads support ...
(April 27) -- Facebook may be the world's most popular social network, but recent changes to the website's privacy settings have members of the U.S. Senate commenting "Dislike." In an open letter addressed to Facebook's 25-year-old founder and CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, and published by Politico this morning, Democratic Sens. Charles Schumer, Michael Bennet, Mark Begich and Al Franken raised major concerns about Facebook on behalf of "users who want to maintain control over their information." The letter follows up on points Schumer made Sunday when he called upon the Federal Trade Commission ...
(April 26) -- With Arizona poised to impose the toughest immigration laws in the land and right-wing radio hosts calling for snipers at the border, President Barack Obama says it's time to take another crack at comprehensive immigration reform. His call to renew the immigration debate no doubt leaves many Americans thinking, "Here we go again," exhausted as we all are from the national brawl over health care reform. Goodbye, public option; hello, amnesty? But there lies a path to immigration reform that could both transform an outdated system and win the speedy approval of most Americans. ...
Senate Minority Whip Jon Kyl said Sunday he would not take the possibility of using a filibuster to try and block confirmation of whoever President Obama nominates to the Supreme Court "off the table," but he said the chances of Republicans using that tactic was "unlikely." "I am going to abide by what became known as the rule of the gang of 14," Kyl said on ABC's This Week. "It is unlikely that there would be a filibuster, except if there is an extraordinary circumstance." Kyl was referring to the group of seven Democratic and seven Republican senators who joined together to avert a major ...
In July 2008, Sen. Barack Obama took time out of his packed presidential campaign schedule to address a crucial block of voters whom he would need in his fight against Sen. John McCain in the November elections. During his speech to the League of Latin American Citizens, a leading Latino organization, Obama lamented the lack of presidential leadership on immigration reform in 2006, and promised to do better. "We need a president who isn't going to walk away from something as important as comprehensive immigration reform when it becomes politically unpopular," he told the group. "That's the ...
Former five-term Tennessee Rep. Harold Ford, who now lives in New York and is a regular on the political talk show circuit, says he won't be "bullied or intimidated" by Democratic party leaders who are trying to discourage him from challenging Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, who was appointed last year to fill out the term of Hillary Clinton, according to the New York Times. The Times quoted a spokesman for Ford as saying that New York needed a senator with the "independence to stand up and do what is right for our state, regardless of what the party bosses in Albany and Washington want." While ...
There seemed to be enough lawmakers on the Sunday news shows the day after a major health care reform vote to make up a quorum, but the one clear message that emerged was the long and difficult road the legislation has to go in the Senate. ...
