GOP Prepares to Unveil New 'Contract With America'

Republicans are going back to their '90s playbook as Election Day approaches, planning to unveil a new "Contract With America." A GOP spokesman told The Hill that House and Senate Republicans will introduce the new compact on Thursday in Virginia. The document will showcase the GOP's agenda should the party be restored to power on Capitol Hill. GOP leaders have already hinted at some of the ideas that could be included. According to The Hill: House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-Ohio), for instance, has called for a two-year freeze in tax rates and a reduction in spending to 2008 levels. ...

House Approves 'Disclose' Bill, Forcing More Openness in Campaign Ads

The House has voted to force corporations and unions to disclose more information about the sponsors and financiers of costly campaign advertisements they air in the months and weeks before elections. But the bill faces tough sledding in the Senate, which already has a crowded agenda as midterm elections approach in November. The measure passed, 219-206, Thursday with most Republican members and some three dozen Democrats in opposition. A huge exemption for the National Rifle Association and other large non-profits that get no more than 15 percent of their funding from corporations cost the ...

Campaign Ads: Disclosure Bill Nears Vote in House

A compromise bill requiring corporations and labor unions to identify themselves and disclose names of donors when they air political advertisements attacking or backing candidates for federal office is nearing a vote in the U.S. House. The deal opening the way for a vote would exempt large, established non-profit groups, such as the National Rifle Association, from restrictions in the measure, which is being pushed as a way around a Supreme Court decision permitting companies, unions and non-profits to spend unlimited amounts on campaign commercials. The court said such spending was ...

Are Democrats Screwed in 2010?

Are Democrats Screwed in 2010?

If I were a Democratic strategist reading through the latest poll covering voters' preferences for the coming congressional elections, I'd shake my head and mutter, "We're screwed." Or maybe just cry. A few weeks ago at a breakfast with reporters, Rep. Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.), who heads the Democrats' House campaign committee, argued that though this is a difficult year for Democrats, given the anti-incumbent fever in the electorate, the Dems will manage to maintain a majority in the House by reminding voters that they are on the side of average Americans and that Republicans have stood with ...

Two Republicans Co-Sponsor Democrat Van Hollen's Campaign Finance Bill

Two House Republicans have signed on to co-sponsor a bill by Democratic Rep. Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.) that would limit the recent Supreme Court decision allowing unlimited campaign spending by corporations. Reps. Mike Castle of Delaware and Walter Jones of North Carolina will join Van Hollen (pictured) in introducing the bill Thursday, Politico reported. A companion bill drafted by Democrats in the Senate will be unveiled Thursday at the Supreme Court. The White House supports the legislation. The bill would restrict the types of companies that could air campaign ads and require those ...

Van Hollen: Democrats Are Still the Party of Change, Will Keep Their Majority

Van Hollen: Democrats Are Still the Party of Change, Will Keep Their Majority

Republicans are banking this fall on a wave election -- dozens of GOP candidates swept into the House in a national backlash to Democratic control of Washington. But Republicans won't be the only party with a story to tell. Rep. Chris Van Hollen, head of the Democrats' House campaign committee, says Democrats will argue in every congressional district that they are still the party of change -- especially when it comes to the recession. "We will make the case that supporting Republicans will simply turn back the clock to Bush economic policies – the same policies that got us into this ...

Van Hollen, Head of Campaign Committee, Admits Dems Face 'Uphill Climb'

Van Hollen, Head of Campaign Committee, Admits Dems Face 'Uphill Climb'

Outside of Washington's Beltway, the jargon "D-Triple C" holds little currency for the general public. But inside it, most people know that the DCCC -- the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee -- is where money is raised and candidates are recruited to protect the power of the majority in the House of Representatives. And playing defense in this election year is the name of the game for the person who chairs the committee, Rep. Chris Van Hollen, a good-natured Democrat in his fourth term from an affluent suburban Maryland district. In a lengthy interview with The Hill newspaper, Van ...

Democrats Still Short of Votes But Predict Health Bill Will Pass

After months of deadlines that have come and gone, White House officials and congressional leaders expressed confidence Sunday that they will get the votes they need this week to pass a comprehensive health care reform bill, but they conceded that they are not there yet. At the same time, Republicans renewed charges that President Obama and Democratic leaders were "arrogant" and "tone deaf" in trying to push through legislation the country doesn't want, and warned that passage of the reform package would not only wreak havoc on the health care system but would be a disaster at the polls for ...

Sebelius Predicts Health Bill Passage, But Dodges the Question of 'When?'

Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius predicted Sunday that Democratic congressional leaders will find enough support to pass a comprehensive health care reform bill but she ducked the question of when backers of the legislation will be ready to put it to a vote. At meetings with groups of House Democrats on Thursday, President Obama underlined the need to get the a health care reform package passed soon. His spokesman, Robert Gibbs, said Obama expected the House to do so by March 18 before he leaves on a trip to Australia and Indonesia. House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer said ...
