The nationwide referendum is the first major test of the country's transition to democracy after a popular uprising forced longtime leader Hosni Mubarak to step down five weeks ago, handing the reins of power to the military. Early signs show an unusually big turnout, with lines forming in the hours ...
Gay marriage is continuing to gain acceptance among the public -- the latest survey from the Pew Research Center shows Americans almost evenly split between those who oppose and those who support same-sex marriage. According to the poll, conducted during the last week of February, 45 percent of Americans say gays and lesbians should be allowed to marry, up from 37 percent in 2009 (and just 27 percent in 1996) while 46 percent oppose same-sex marriage, down from 54 percent two years ago, and down from a 65 percent disapproval rate in 1996. Partisan differences remain stark, with 57 percent of ...
"What would Jesus do?" That question has for years been a powerful slogan for conservative Christians who want to challenge Americans to conform to Gospel teachings. But now that some are applying the rallying cry to the nation's divisive budget battles, it is also exposing divisions among Christians as much as it is offering a united witness of faith -- or public policy. Earlier this week a coalition of dozens of progressive Christian leaders led by Jim Wallis of Sojourners launched a campaign, "What would Jesus cut?" with a full-page ad in Monday's edition of Politico, and the group is ...
COLUMBIA, S.C. -- It's the old story. Boy meet girl. Boy argues with girl over the literal truth of the book of Genesis. Boy and girl and her father -- and his mother ... no, I won't spoil the movie for you (brush up on your Einstein if you go, though). Sharron Angle, a mother and recent Senate hopeful, told the handful of viewers that came to the South Carolina premiere of the Christian film "The Genesis Code" that it's "our alternative to Hollywood." The unsuccessful Nevada candidate acknowledged "the support that South Carolina gave me" in the race and thanked "the people of values and ...
Alabama's new governor, Robert Bentley, told a Martin Luther King Day crowd that he plans to be a governor "of all the people," but then added that anybody "who has not accepted Jesus Christ as their savior, I'm telling you, you're not my brother and you're not my sister." Bentley's remarks came after he delivered a warm tribute to Dr. King at the Dexter Avenue King Memorial Baptist Church in Montgomery, where the slain civil rights leader once served as pastor. "I was elected as a Republican candidate. But once I became governor...I became the governor of all the people. I intend to ...
EIN KAREM, Israel -- Christian tourists have long come to the Holy Land to walk in the footsteps of Jesus. Now they can trace the path of the Virgin Mary as well. "The Holy Land is the homeland of the Virgin Mary, where all the important events in her life took place, and it is only natural to follow a pilgrimage itinerary in her footsteps," said Noaz Bar-Nir, director-general of the Ministry of Tourism. In this picturesque village on the outskirts of Jerusalem, tourists can visit Mary's spring, where Catholic tradition says she stopped to drink water on her way to visit her cousin ...
DUBAI, United Arab Emirates -- Iran has arrested about 70 Christians since Christmas in a crackdown that demonstrates the limits of religious tolerance by Islamic leaders who often boast they provide room for other faiths. The latest raids have targeted grass-roots Christian groups Iran describes as "hard-liners" who pose a threat to the Islamic state. Authorities increasingly view them with suspicions that range from trying to convert Muslims to being possible footholds for foreign influence. Christian activists claim their Iranian brethren are being persecuted simply for worshipping ...
CAIRO -- The wives of two Egyptian Coptic priests, forbidden by the Church from divorcing their abusive husbands, desperately sought another way out by converting to Islam. When their intentions were discovered, police handed them over to the Church and their whereabouts since have been unknown. The cases caused a furor at home that spilled over the borders and turned deadly when al-Qaida in Iraq cited the women as the reason behind the bloodiest attack ever on Christians in Iraq - a five-hour siege of a church in October that left 68 people dead. It was a stark example of the schism between ...
BETHLEHEM, West Bank - The traditional birthplace of Jesus is celebrating its merriest Christmas in years, as tens of thousands of tourists thronged Bethlehem on Friday for the annual holiday festivities in this biblical West Bank town. Officials said the turnout was shaping up to be the largest since 2000. Unseasonably mild weather, a virtual halt in Israeli-Palestinian violence and a burgeoning economic revival in the West Bank all added to the holiday cheer. By nightfall, a packed Manger Square was awash in red, blue, green and yellow Christmas lights. Merrymakers blasted horns, bands ...
