The Christmas shopping season got off to a strong start on Friday, despite the weak economy, according to preliminary numbers compiled by ShopperTrak RCT, which tracks sales at 50,000 retailers nationwide. Sales for Friday totaled $10.6 billion, three percent ahead of last year. Many shoppers took advantage of deep discounts offered by stores, which were anticipating a slower than normal sales day.
