'It Wasn't Ozzie and Harriet' - Chris Buckley Unmasks Famous Parents

Several months ago, I reported on some troubling rumors regarding the forthcoming Christopher Buckley book , "Mum and Pup and Me". The concern, of course, was that the younger Buckley was planning on writing a less than flattering portrayal of his famous conservative parents, Pat and William F. Buckley. When this was confirmed to me by two credible sources -- one a conservative insider and the other a publishing executive -- I knew there was, at least, an element of truth to the story. It turns out, the rumors appear to be true. Today's New York Times Magazine features a cover story adapted ...

Buckley to Diss Dad in New Book?

Buckley to Diss Dad in New Book?

You may recall Christopher Buckley's controversial article last year, "Sorry Dad, I'm Voting for Obama," which promptly ended his writing at National Review. At the time, several people remarked to me that, prior to the controversy, they had never even heard of Chris Buckley (which is odd, inasmuch as he has written many books, including "Thank You for Smoking.") Regardless, I am now hearing from two independent and reliable sources that Buckley is writing a new book, which will take some shots at his late famous father, William F. Buckley, Jr. Conservatives, of course, revere William F. ...

GOP Navigates Desperation Straits

GOP Navigates Desperation Straits

As we approach the final week of the campaign, a palpable sense of desperation has overtaken the Republican party. John McCain seems poised to suffer an epic defeat. He has abandoned the Bill Ayers strategy in favor of Joe the Plumber. Neither seems to be doing much good. The RNC is diverting money from the presidential campaign in a last ditch hope to save congressional seats. Democrats are on the verge of taking a filibuster-proof majority in the Senate, and will certainly expand upon their superiority in the House. Meanwhile, GOP pundits have formed a circular firing squad, excoriating one ...

Buckley Quits National Review

Buckley Quits National Review

Here's a follow-up on my earlier piece about Christopher Buckley--the son of conservative thinker William F. Buckley, Jr.--who last week endorsed Barack Obama for president of the United States. Apparently, that move didn't sit too well with fellow some conservatives, especially those who work for William F.'s old magazine, The National Review. So, Christopher announced today that he was leaving the publication, effective immediately. Here's part of his reasoning:"While I regret this development, I am not in mourning, for I no longer have any clear idea what, exactly, the modern conservative ...

Christopher Buckley to Vote Obama

By  Denise Williams - Politics Daily
Christopher Buckley to Vote Obama

Son of conservative scion William F. Buckley, Jr. has had it with John McCain and Sarah Palin, is voting for Obama and is not shy about it.Writing in The Daily Beast, Buckley says:Let me be the latest conservative/libertarian/whatever to leap onto the Barack Obama bandwagon. It's a good thing my dear old mum and pup are no longer alive. They'd cut off my allowance. And while Buckley extols the virtues and service of McCain, he explains why he no longer thinks McCain is right for the job:But that was-sigh-then. John McCain has changed. He said, famously, apropos the Republican debacle post-1994, ...

William F. Buckley's Son for Obama

By  David Knowles - Politics Daily
William F. Buckley's Son for Obama

Read all about it in Tina Brown's new juggernaut, The Daily Beast. Christopher Buckley, a successful author in his own right, started out this campaign as a McCain supporter. So what turned him away from the Arizona senator? This campaign has changed John McCain. It has made him inauthentic. A once-first class temperament has become irascible and snarly; his positions change, and lack coherence; he makes unrealistic promises, such as balancing the federal budget "by the end of my first term." Who, really, believes that? Then there was his self-dramatizing and feckless suspension of his campaign ...

Buckley Scion Gets Mad

By  Dave - Politics Daily
Buckley Scion Gets Mad

This piece from Christopher Buckley deserves some attention, since he is the son of the William F. Buckley who founded National Review and was widely seen as the leader of the conservative movement for many, many years. It may strike some conservatives today as odd, if not absurd, to see John McCain being subjected to an auto-da-fé conducted by such Torquemadas of the right as Rush Limbaugh, Ann Coulter, Sean Hannity. The other day, he even endured jeers at a conservative gathering in Washington, by otherwise well-behaved exemplars of conservatism. Indeed, turn on the TV at any hour of the ...
