Is the Tea Party Losing Its Strength?

Is the Tea Party Losing Its Strength?

What a surprise: The Tea Party is not as popular as it once was. That was part of the news contained in a Washington Post/ABC News poll released this week. (The other hardly shocking and bad-for-Democrats news: only 29 percent are inclined to vote for their current representative in Congress.) Fifty percent of the respondents said they hold an "unfavorable impression" of this conservative, anti-Obama, anti-government movement -- an increase from 39 percent in March (when the health care reform slugfest was under way). Those with a favorable view dropped from 41 to 36 percent, and those folks ...

California Senate Race: Carly Fiorina, Climate Change and an Idiotic Ad

California Senate Race: Carly Fiorina, Climate Change and an Idiotic Ad

There's an old cliché: Character is how you behave when no one is looking. And there's another way of testing character for a politician: what he or she is willing to say to get elected. Carly Fiorina failed that test this week -- when she released perhaps the most idiotic and juvenile campaign ad of the election year. Fiorina, the former CEO of Hewlett-Packard, is the leading candidate in the California Republican Senate primary and is expected to beat former Rep. Tom Campbell and state Assemblyman Chuck DeVore in next week's election. (This week, Campbell pulled his television ads.) So ...

California's Tom Campbell: GOP Senate Candidate Who Defies Easy Labeling

California's Tom Campbell: GOP Senate Candidate Who Defies Easy Labeling

In an era of expedient political branding, California's Tom Campbell, a Republican candidate aiming to win Barbara Boxer's U.S. Senate seat, defies labeling. A free-market economist who advocates breaking up big banks, a social liberal with conservative views on immigration, an opponent of the nation's recently passed national health care legislation, he supports repealing the federal antitrust exemption for insurance companies. In polls, Campbell, 57, trails former Hewlett Packard chief executive Carly Fiorina for the nomination but, unlike Fiorina, leads Boxer in a hypothetical matchup. ...

Meg Whitman, Carly Fiorina Regain Footing in California GOP Contests

Former Hewlett-Packard CEO Carly Fiorina and former eBay chief executive Meg Whitman appear to have rebounded in their respective races for the GOP senate and gubernatorial nominations in California, according to a SurveyUSA poll conducted May 21-23. Fiorina, who a recent Public Policy Institute of California survey showed to be in a horserace with former Rep. Tom Campbell, leads in this poll by 46 percent to 23 percent with 14 percent for state Assemblyman Chuck DeVore. Two other candidates share 6 percent and 11 percent are undecided. In the GOP race for governor, Whitman leads state ...

Sarah Palin Endorses Carly Fiorina for California Senate

Sarah Palin Endorses Carly Fiorina for California Senate

Republican Carly Fiorina scored a coup Thursday when Sarah Palin endorsed her for the GOP Senate nomination in California. In doing so, Palin bypassed state assemblyman Chuck DeVore, a favorite of conservatives such as Sen. Jim DeMint of South Carolina. In a statement circulated by Fiorina, Palin praised the former Hewlett-Packard CEO as a "commonsense conservative" with the potential to beat the longtime Democratic incumbent, Barbara Boxer. Palin said she is "a huge proponent" of contested primaries, but supports Fiorina "as she fights through a tough primary against a liberal member of the ...

Campbell Edging Fiorina in Race for GOP Senate Nod in California

Former Rep. Tom Campbell leads former Hewlett-Packard chief executive Carly Fiorina by 29 percent to 25 percent in the race for California's Republican Senate nomination, with state Rep. Chuck DeVore way behind at 9 percent, according to a Los Angeles Times/USC poll conducted March 23-30. Four percent prefer another candidate and 33 percent are undecided with the June 8 primary election approaching. For the general election, the poll matched Sen. Barbara Boxer, a Democrat, against only a generic Republican candidate. Boxer led, 48 percent to 34 percent, with 6 percent preferring someone else ...

Boxer Facing Stiff Challenge from Any of the Republicans Seeking Her Seat

Republicans Carly Fiorina, the former head of Hewlett-Packard, former Rep. Tom Campbell, and state Rep. Chuck DeVore are all mounting competitive challenges to three-term Democratic Sen. Barbara Boxer with two of the GOP hopefuls running neck-and-neck with her, according to a Public Policy Institute of California poll conducted March 9-16. Campbell is statistically tied with Boxer, leading her 44 percent to 43 percent with 13 percent undecided. Independents back Campbell by a 48 percent to 32 percent margin with 20 percent undecided. Boxer leads Fiorina 44 percent to 43 percent with 13 ...

Barbara Boxer's Numbers Plunge in California Senate Race

Barbara Boxer's Numbers Plunge in California Senate Race

Democratic Sen. Barbara Boxer of California is looking increasingly vulnerable in her bid for a fourth term, with her favorability ratings moving into negative territory and two of the Republican hopefuls seeking her seat moving into statistical ties with her in general election match-ups, according to a Field Poll conducted March 9-15. Fifty-one percent view Boxer unfavorably while 38 percent see her favorably, with 11 percent undecided. That's a reversal since January, when 48 percent saw her favorably and 39 percent unfavorably, with 13 percent undecided. In the general election ...

GOP's Campbell Catches Up to Boxer in California Senate Race

Former California Republican Rep. Tom Campbell has moved into a statistical tie with Democratic Sen. Barbara Boxer in her bid to win a fourth term, according to a Rasmussen Reports poll conducted March 11. Boxer leads Campbell by 43 percent to 41 percent with 6 percent preferring some other candidate and 10 percent undecided. The margin of error is 4.5 points. Last month, Boxer's margin was 45 percent to 41 percent. Boxer leads former Hewlett-Packard CEO Carly Fiorina, 46 percent to 40 percent, two points more than a month ago. Four percent prefer someone else and 10 percent are undecided. ...

California Senate, Governor Contests Could Shape Up as Close Races

California Senate, Governor Contests Could Shape Up as Close Races

The Democrats have the edge right now in the California senator's and governor's races but by margins that suggest both races are competitive, according to a Daily Kos/Research 2000 poll conducted March 8-10. Former eBay chief executive Meg Whitman, who the poll shows far ahead of Insurance Commissioner Steve Poizner for the GOP gubernatorial nomination, is within 4 points of Democrat Jerry Brown, trailing him by a 45 percent to 41 percent margin. If Poizner pulled off an upset and was the candidate, Brown would be leading him by 48 percent to 33 percent. The margin of error is 4 points. ...
