Click here to visit the new home of Politics Daily! In one of their last acts before a summer recess, U.S. senators approved a $600 million package to beef up security along the Mexican border with 1,500 additional guards and unmanned surveillance drones. The bill, which passed on a voice vote, would be financed by raising fees on foreign-based personnel companies that bring skilled workers into the United States, often from India. The House of Representatives passed similar legislation, and could take up the Senate bill when it comes back from its summer recess for a one-day session next week, the Associated Press said. Sen. Charles Schumer ...
Four U.S. senators have called on oil giant BP to halt its plans to drill for oil off the coast of Libya until questions about possible terrorist connections behind the company's drilling contracts there have been resolved. "The more we learn about the [matter] in recent days, the more it makes the stomach turn," Sen. Robert Menendez (D-N.J.) said at a Capitol Hill press conference Wednesday. BP confirmed Thursday that it lobbied the U.K. government to speed up the release of Libyan prisoners in order to finalize an drilling agreement with Libya, but denied that it tried to intervene in ...
A compromise bill requiring corporations and labor unions to identify themselves and disclose names of donors when they air political advertisements attacking or backing candidates for federal office is nearing a vote in the U.S. House. The deal opening the way for a vote would exempt large, established non-profit groups, such as the National Rifle Association, from restrictions in the measure, which is being pushed as a way around a Supreme Court decision permitting companies, unions and non-profits to spend unlimited amounts on campaign commercials. The court said such spending was ...
This week on Politics Daily's online Sunday show, Woman UP, Alex Wagner, Patricia Murphy, Lynn Sweet, Bonnie Erbe' and I discuss the Senate vultures already circling the not-dead-yet Harry Reid -- and campaiging to succeed him as majority leader. And for all those on both the left and right who have complained about Reid, we have two words for you: Chuck Schumer. Click play below to watch the video: ...
The boomlet for action this year on immigration reform could be dying down. President Obama said Wednesday night that "there may not be an appetite immediately to dive into another controversial issue." And Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid says an energy bill will take precedence on the crowded Senate calendar. Demands for fast federal action to establish an orderly process for allowing workers into this country while also securing the border with Mexico grew after Arizona enacted a harsh law authorizing police to stop and question individuals suspected of being in the U.S. illegally. Reid, ...
(April 27) -- Facebook may be the world's most popular social network, but recent changes to the website's privacy settings have members of the U.S. Senate commenting "Dislike." In an open letter addressed to Facebook's 25-year-old founder and CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, and published by Politico this morning, Democratic Sens. Charles Schumer, Michael Bennet, Mark Begich and Al Franken raised major concerns about Facebook on behalf of "users who want to maintain control over their information." The letter follows up on points Schumer made Sunday when he called upon the Federal Trade Commission ...
Democratic leaders, still frustrated over a Supreme Court ruling giving corporations more leeway on campaign spending, are planning a push to force business donors and other groups to publicly disclose their involvement in political advertisements. One element of the initiative would require corporation CEOs or union chiefs to personally appear in television or radio spots stating that their organizations are responsible for the ads, the New York Times reported. The Supreme Court, in a 5-4 decision in January, threw out restrictions on spending by companies or unions on campaign advertising ...
(April 2) -- Enough, already. It's time for public financing of campaigns. Now. Not next week, not next year, not when the Supreme Court is forced to take up yet another attempt to navigate between the First Amendment and public buying of politicians. The first insult to that navigation idea was the court's decision in January that corporations are people too. The high court said corporations have the same rights as people when it comes to political speech, so they can take out ads touting their political agendas. A Montgomery County, Md., company, Murray Hill Inc., made a mockery of that ...
While lawmakers fiercely debated health care reform before a historic vote in the Capitol on Sunday, thousands of people rallied on the National Mall outside to demand that Washington put immigration reform on the front burner. Entire families turned out, including young children and parents with strollers. Others came with church, school, or community activist groups. As the crowd marched past the Capitol at the end of the rally, they were joined by several drummers and a marching band. Many demonstrators also held hand-lettered signs and chanted "Si, se puede" (Yes, we can) and "Obama, ...
