Condi Rice: Pro-Choice, Libertarian . . . and Evangelical

Former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice declared in a recent interview that she is proudly evangelical but also distanced herself from many of her fellow believers by saying that she tends to support abortion rights and civil unions for gay couples, and she feels evangelicals too often alienate others with in-your-face rhetoric. "It's extremely important not to assault people," Rice told Christianity Today, the flagship evangelical magazine, in a Dec. 20 interview. "Sometimes I think evangelicals come at people so hard and so fast and don't take time to listen to where somebody is," she ...

Year in Review: Five Women on Top in Pop Culture

Year in Review: Five Women on Top in Pop Culture

At year's end we've got a rich crop of uppity women -- real and imagined -- who left their deep prints on popular culture in 2010. Some are famous, some are obscure. Some are not widely known by name but known for what they did. But all had a measure of influence on society, on the media, on politics, on the entertainment business, on the national conversation. They helped reshape the cultural landscape while enraging and entertaining, shocking and inspiring millions of people, for good or bad. My top five: 1. Sarah Palin -- she'll be on everyone's list. A genius at media dominance, her ...

Cindy McCain Knocks 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell' Ban on Gays in Military

Cindy McCain is appearing in a new video ad sharply critical of the military's "Don't ask, don't tell" policy on gays -- the very law her husband, Sen. John McCain, is battling to keep on the books. "Our political and religious leaders tell LGBT [lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender] youth that they have no future," McCain says in the ad, which also features celebrities and rock stars. "They can't serve our country openly." Later in the video, referring to bullies, she adds, "Our government treats the LGBT community like second-class citizens -- why shouldn't they?" Bush Takes a Shot at McCain in His 'Decision Points' Memoir

Bush Takes a Shot at McCain in His 'Decision Points' Memoir

(Nov. 8) -- George W. Bush once kicked John McCain when he was a threat, but now he's kicking him when he's down. In his new memoir, "Decision Points," Bush says McCain responded poorly to the financial crisis and should have asked him for help in taking on Barack Obama in the 2008 presidential race. McCain may be guilty of the first charge: As the financial crisis exploded, the Arizona senator suspended his campaign, then quickly backtracked, all the while offering no substantive proposals for righting the nation's economy. But as for the second claim, Bush had only a 25 percent approval ...

'Brothers at War' Documentary Explores Iraq's Impact on a Family

'Brothers at War' Documentary Explores Iraq's Impact on a Family

The Washington screening of "Brothers at War" Wednesday night brought the mostly military crowd to thunderous applause and to tears. U.S. Army Chief of Staff Gen. George Casey introduced the movie as "a story about a great American family . . . a great Army family. It portrays not only the sacrifices that the men and women in our armed forces make, but it also ties into the impact on the families, and that is less well known." In the documentary film, director Jake Rademacher follows the lives of his brothers Isaac and Joe, who have served repeated tours in Iraq and Afghanistan. Rademacher ...

Cindy McCain Poses for Ad Supporting Gay Marriage

Cindy McCain Poses for Ad Supporting Gay Marriage

Cindy McCain has posed for an ad released by the NOH8 campaign, a pro-gay-marriage effort that pictures celebrities with their mouths taped shut, the Associated Press reports. McCain appears in the usual format: dressed in white, with "NOH8" painted on her cheek and silver duct tape across her mouth. (H8 refers to the ballot measure passed by California voters in 2008 banning same-sex marriage.) The ad was a surprise to some, since John McCain opposed gay marriage during his 2008 presidential run, and his wife rarely speaks out on particular issues. McCain's office issued a statement saying ...

McCain's Wife Poses for Ad Endorsing Gay Marriage

WASHINGTON (Jan. 20) -- Cindy McCain, the wife of 2008 Republican presidential nominee John McCain, and their daughter Meghan have posed for photos endorsing pro-gay marriage forces in California. Mrs. McCain appears with silver duct tape across her mouth and "NOH8" written on one cheek in a photo posted Wednesday to the Web site of NOH8, a gay rights group opposed to Proposition 8. The ballot measure passed by California voters in 2008 bans same-sex marriage. The McCains' daughter Meghan, who has been outspoken in her support for gay rights, has also endorsed NOH8. She appears with silver ...

John McCain Won't Let Cindy Go on 'Dancing With the Stars'?

John McCain Won't Let Cindy Go on 'Dancing With the Stars'?

While John McCain gleefully suggested entering his wife in the Miss Buffalo Chips competition at bike week in Sturgis, South Dakota (to the approving hoots of the crowd), apparently he is not as keen on the idea of seeing Cindy become a contestant on ABC's "Dancing With the Stars." From the never-told-a-lie NY Post:Our impeccably placed source says, "Just before Thanksgiving, Cindy McCain started talks with producers to apper as a dancer on the show. She wanted to do it very badly." But this week, Sen. McCain "put the kibosh on it." Reps for the show and McCain didn't return the calls.Well, ...

Another Cindy McCain Photo and a Correction

Another Cindy McCain Photo and a Correction

As I reported yesterday, The National Enquirer is trying to complete a political trifecta by pushing a rumor about Cindy McCain with "another man." Radar Online has acquired another grainy photo of a blonde in a turtleneck kissing a Steven Seagal lookalike. As I stated before, both pictures could be perfectly innocent, and the Enquirer offers no proof to the contrary, even parsing its accusation into single-ply tissue paper. It is worth noting, however, an error in HuffPo's reporting. A reader notes that this story is particularly dubious because Cindy McCain was on a trip to Kosovo at the ...
