Click here to visit the new home of Politics Daily! The location of a car packed with explosives in Manhattan's Times Square on Saturday night prompted a New York congressman to wonder if the failed bombing was linked to a recent episode of Comedy Central's "South Park" that depicted the prophet Muhammad. The Nissan Pathfinder's location, at the intersection of 45th Street, Broadway, and Seventh Avenue, was less than a block from the office tower that houses Viacom, the parent company of Comedy Central. Last month, Comedy Central made waves by censoring an episode of the irreverent show that mocked Muhammad and other religious figures. The ...
NEW YORK (April 22) -- After a radical Islamic group issued a thinly veiled threat against the creators of "South Park," the network aired an episode with references to and depictions of the Prophet Muhammad blocked out. A note on the show's website said Comedy Central had inserted "numerous additional audio bleeps throughout" the show, adding "we do not have network approval to stream our original version of the show." The episode was the second half of a storyline that began last week with an episode depicting the Prophet Muhammad in a bear suit. A day later, a blog post on Revolution ...
Hope everyone enjoyed their Independence Day celebrations. My family and I enjoyed the fireworks from the roof of our Brooklyn apartment and I came THIS close to getting a three-day weekend if it were not for a certain pesky Alaskan governor, who needed to make a dramatic and confounding announcement. It's good to be back, though, and here, as always, are your Politics Dailies: If you can't wait until tonight to see what Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert have to say about Sarah Palin's announcement, check out the work by Dennis DiClaudio and Mary Phillips-Sandy over on Comedy Central's ...
As an avid fan of both Meghan McCain and Stephen Colbert (despite our rocky history), I tuned in to last night's Meg-augmented episode of the Colbert Report with bells on. Meghan looked great, and even managed to throw Stephen Colbert momentarily out of character, a first as far as I know, with her declaration that she is a pro-sex woman. I also have to give Meg props for resisting the enticing temptation to lick Colbert's face. This got me thinking, Colbert is famous for taking credit when politicians receive a bump from going on his show. So I wondered if Colbert would get a similar bump from ...
The short answer is "no," but it's a nice entree´ into another distracting brouhaha, in which the messenger eclipses the message. In this case, a question that I intended to ask at Wednesday's White House Press Briefing, and which I began writing an article about Thursday morning, was remarkably similar to a bit that was on The Daily Show Thursday night. I held that article up so I could try to get that question in at Friday's briefing, which I did:Imagine my surprise, then, when Comedy Central's Indecision Forever website accused me of lifting my question from Stewart? (They have since ...

If you're a candidate, Democratic or Republican, and are looking to boost your standing in the polls a bit, that appearance on the The Colbert Report might not be such a bad thing after all. Same goes for authors and musicians who have peddled their wares on the popular late-night host's program on Comedy Central. An actual study (pdf) of this phenomenon has been done by political scientist James Fowler of the University of California showing "first scientific evidence of Stephen Colbert's influence on political campaigns". It has footnotes and everything! While the graph below doesn't show ...
If this is a faux campaign, the cable network is taking it pretty seriously. Or is it just protecting itself from the independent actions of its enigmatic employee? Comedy Central has consulted with DC law firm Wiley Rein and has released this statement (via Politico): Based on the law, prior rulings made by the Federal Election Commission and advice of expert outside counsel, Comedy Central is very comfortable that the network, 'The Colbert Report' and Stephen Colbert are operating well within federal campaign election laws. ...
