Prolific comic book writer Dwayne McDuffie, who also wrote and produced the animated television series "Justice League Unlimited," has died. In a statement, DC Comics co-publisher Dan DiDio said: "Dwayne McDuffie left a lasting legacy on the world of comics that many writers can only aspire to. ... The industry has lost a true talent." Fantastic Four to Become Fantastic Three in 2011

And then there were three. After 50 years working together as a fearsome crime-fighting unit, The Fantastic Four -- Mr. Fantastic, Invisible Woman, Human Torch and the Thing -- will soon be down to a threesome. On Wednesday, Marvel comics foretold the as-yet-unidentified superhero's impending death, which will be revealed in January's issue No. 587. The secret is so confidential (don't ruin this, WikiLeaks) that the comic books will be packaged in black polybags and not sold on newsstands. And lest you underestimate the significance of this monumental event in comic book history, Marvel ...

Radioactive Mouse on Loose at Nuclear Test Site

Radioactive Mouse on Loose at Nuclear Test Site

(Nov. 23) -- Just because a mouse has been doused with radiation at a nuclear weapons site doesn't mean that it has acquired superpowers, can shoot laser beams from its eyes and will soon come to subjugate humanity. But at the same time, it's more than a bit unsettling. Workers at a former plutonium-production facility in Hanford, Wash., are hunting for a radioactive mouse after finding polluted droppings. Earlier this month workers also trapped a radioactive rabbit in what is the nation's most contaminated nuclear site, according to The Washington Post. Getty Images A radioactive mouse ...

It's a Bird, It's a Plane, It's ... Superman With a Hoodie

(Oct. 25) -- Superheroes aren't what they used to be. Superman, 72, is changing his look, making him the latest villain-fighting star to undergo a major makeover in recent years. In a new graphic novel out next month, the iconic hero will be transformed from a clean-shaven, grown man pulsating with testosterone into a skinny 20-year-old still making his way in the world, The New York Post reports. The new, hipster-like hero of the DC Comic novel "Superman: Earth One" is shorter, skinnier and hoodie-wearing, all the better to reflect the changing times of the world in which he lives, says DC ...

A Look at the World's Stupidest Comics

A Look at the World's Stupidest Comics

(Sept. 29) -- Comic book fans and collectors usually focus on titles that were successful, artistically valid or of historical importance. Rarely do they focus on those that are, well, stupid. That's left the door wide open for Shaindle Minuk and her hubby, David Merrill, who for more than five years have been showcasing the lamest, silliest and dumbest characters and stories from comics past on a website fittingly called "Stupid Comics." MisterKitty.org Back in the mid-1960s, Dell Publishing decided to exploit the popularity of monsters and superheroes by turning Count Dracula into a ...

US Military Uses Comics to Highlight Japan Alliance

(Aug. 3) -- On top of battleships and tens of thousands of American troops, the U.S. military is employing a surprising new tool to highlight its alliance with Japan -- comic books. The military is publishing a new version of the popular Japanese-language "manga" comics this week, to mark the 50th anniversary of a security treaty between the U.S. and Japan. It also coincides with the 65th anniversary of when the U.S. dropped an atomic bomb on Hiroshima. The first issue of the four-part series, titled "Our Alliance – A Lasting Partnership," is being published online Wednesday. U.S. ...

Super Shrinks Psychoanalyze Superheroes

Super Shrinks Psychoanalyze Superheroes

SAN DIEGO (July 22) -- Being a superhero has its perks, but caped crusaders like Spider-Man and Batman also can suffer from some super-sized mental problems. However, as anyone who reads comic books knows, it's difficult for Spidey or the Caped Crusader to carve out time from their busy crime-fighting schedule to talk with a mental health expert. But three L.A.-based psychiatrists have come to the rescue, figuring that if they can't get the superheroes on the couch, they can at least give their fans some food for thought about mental health issues. Christopher John Pozios Psychiatric ...

Farewell to the Creator of Feminism's Forgotten Legend, Modesty Blaise

Farewell to the Creator of Feminism's Forgotten Legend, Modesty Blaise

Peter O'Donnell, who died at 90 on May 3 in England, is a quiet case of political irony. His story is -- to paraphrase Graham Greene -- one of an "entertainments" author who accidentally created the first major fictional heroine to embody the principles of feminism that were shouted in the streets of '60s America and institutionalized today in lobbying groups like the National Organization for Women. ...

Marvel Comics Apologizes for Offending Tea Partiers in 'Captain America' Story

Marvel Comics' "Captain America" -- about a superpatriot who fought Nazis in World War II and chased flag burners during the Vietnam War -- is one of the longest-running, best-loved comics in American history. But, Marvel recently apologized for having a story align too closely to the politics of the moment, Yahoo News reports. While infiltrating a right-wing, anti-government militia group known as the "Watchdogs," Captain America encounters mobs of what appear to be Tea Party protesters. In one scene, Captain America and his African-American sidekick, The Falcon, observe an anti-tax protest ...
