'Enthusiasm Gap' Between Republicans and Democrats Shrinks

'Enthusiasm Gap' Between Republicans and Democrats Shrinks

The "enthusiasm gap" between Republicans and Democrats has narrowed heading into this year's congressional elections, although Republicans continue to have the advantage, according to a Fox News/Opinion Dynamics poll conducted May 4-5. Thirty-four percent of Republicans say they are "extremely interested" in this year's midterms compared to 24 percent of Democrats. That margin is smaller than it was in April, when the Republican lead was 42 percent to 20 percent. A Gallup poll conducted April 26-May 2 had also showed the gap shrinking with the Republican advantage over the Democrats among ...

Want to Know How Health Care Will Play in November? Wait Until October

Want to Know How Health Care Will Play in November? Wait Until October

It should be enshrined as the Obama Uncertainty Principle. Making his do-the-right-thing argument last week to wavering Democrats, the president repeatedly stressed the cloudy, crystal ball limitations of self-interested political prophecy. As he put it last Friday at a health care pep rally at George Mason University, "I don't know what's going to happen with the politics on this thing. I don't know whether my poll numbers go down [or] they go up. I don't know what happens in terms of Democrats versus Republicans." Presidents rarely give such public voice to humility, even if the conceit ...

America's Biggest Little Election

By  Steve Pendlebury - AOL News
America's Biggest Little Election

There are only two congressional elections Tuesday, but one of them is turning out to be a real doozy. In what pundits are treating as a microcosm of the battle for the soul of the GOP, Republican Dede Scozzafava abruptly quit the race in New York's 23rd District and endorsed a Democrat instead of the Conservative Party candidate. Pressure from conservatives who rallied around third-party challenger Doug Hoffman -- including such potential Republican presidential candidates as Sarah Palin and Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty -- forced Scozzafava to give up. Another possible 2012 contender, Newt ...

GOP Research: Indep. Obama Voters Still Like Him, But Not His Spending

Leading Republican strategists say they're confident they can make gains in Congress next year -- if they focus on issues and train their fire on congressional Democrats as opposed to President Obama.Resurgent Republic, a conservative research and strategy group, conducted 10 focus groups in five cities with independent voters who supported Obama last year and are undecided about the congressional elections next year. The participants were uneasy about the economy and the huge deficits that Obama's plans are expected to create, and harsh in their assessment of Democratic congressional leaders ...

House Gets Budget Boost As Questions Arise on Use of Funds

The Democratic majority in the House has tucked a $90 million increase into the staff budgets of members in anticipation of the 2010 Congressional elections. The 15% increase will be allocated equally to each member and may be used for any legal purpose the member wishes within his own office. But some are questioning the need for the increase in a time of economic uncertainty and the dubious legality of the expenditure it will likely fund. The House Chief Administrative Officer's request for the boost in members allowances says that the money is necessary in part to cover a biennial increase ...

Republicans Pass Democrats in Congressional Preference Ballot

Republicans Pass Democrats in Congressional Preference Ballot

There is a surprise for Democrats and President Obama in the polls on this 100th day of the Obama presidency that could put a damper on the celebrations, especially among Congressional Democrats. Rasmussen Reports published new results for its generic Congressional ballot, and for only the second time in the past five years, Republicans topped Democrats in voters' preference for Congress. And both of those instances have occured since January. Forty-one percent of voters now say that they would vote for the Republican candidate in their district versus just thirty-eight percent who would ...
