Mexican Lawmaker Denied Immunity in Drug Cartel Case

(Dec. 15) -- Mexico's Congress has voted to strip a lawmaker of his immunity, allowing for the prosecution of a sitting congressman with alleged ties to the country's powerful drug cartels for the first time ever in the country. Lawmakers voted 382-2 to let federal prosecutors move forward with a criminal case against Julio Cesar Godoy, a representative from the state of Michoacan accused of laundering money for the notorious La Familia cartel. "It is our judgment that there is enough evidence to support the accusations by the attorney general's office," Cesar Augusto Santiago, who headed ...

Conservative Radio Host Loses Hill Job After Remarks

Nov. 12 -- Joyce Kaufman's controversial statements have afforded her a radio career, but now they appear to have cost her a job on Capitol Hill. Just days after being hired as chief of staff for incoming Congressman Allen West (R-Fla.), the conservative talk show host has dropped out because of remarks she made at a tea party rally during the campaign, Politico reported Thursday. Her comments had made their way around the Internet in the days since she was tapped for the congressional position. "I am convinced that the most important thing the founding fathers did to ensure me my First ...

Charlie Rangel Allegations: Top 4 Misdeeds Cited by Ethics Committee

(July 29) -- The House Ethics Committee released 13 allegations today against New York Democratic Rep. Charles Rangel. If he fails to come to a settlement during the next few weeks, the House will hold a very public hearing to present its case against him, inevitably clouding his bid for re-election this fall. While the congressman mulls his fate and confuses commentators, Surge Desk took a look at the 44-page document and came away with four top picks for his most damning alleged misdeeds. 1. Inappropriate use of the sacred congressional letterhead. In 2005, Rangel sent out a flurry of ...

50-Star Flag Designed by Ohio Teen Turns 50

(July 3) -- This Fourth of July marks the 50th anniversary of something special: the birth of the 50-star flag. While it might not seem like much of an accomplishment, there's a patriotic story behind the design of the flag. In 1958, a 17-year-old Ohio teenager, Robert Heft, had a high school assignment to create something of his own imagination and concept. AP Photo/Byron Rollins President Dwight Eisenhower holds a corner of a new 50-star flag displayed for the first time at the White House on Aug. 21, 1959. Minutes earlier, the president signed a proclamation admitting Hawaii to ...

Another Health Care Vote Heads to Washington

SAN FRANCISCO (Nov. 4) -- California Lt. Gov. John Garamendi flew to Washington, D.C., today to add another job description to his lengthy political resume: Democratic member of Congress. A former state insurance commissioner and Clinton administration official, Garamendi had dreamed for decades of becoming governor. But he abandoned that ambition earlier this year to run for an open seat in Congress. He won handily Tuesday, defeating conservative Republican David Harmer by a margin of 53. At 64, he will be one of the House's oldest freshmen, but he doesn't plan to take a back seat. ...

William Jefferson Convicted in Cash-in-Freezer Case

During his many years in Congress, William Jefferson accumulated power the quiet way. He walled himself off from the garish self-promotion that defines so many of his colleagues. Now, barring a successful appeal of his corruption conviction, he faces years behind the walls of prison. Jefferson has been found guilty by an Alexandria, Va., jury of 11 counts, including soliciting and accepting bribes and using his official position to further a criminal enterprise. It was all connected to favors he granted in pursuit of African business ventures. The case had various bizarre twists and turns over ...
