Constance McMillen Didn't Get The Prom She Wanted, But Will Get $35K

(July 20) -- A Mississippi school district has agreed to pay $35,000 to 18-year-old Constance McMillen and to amend its anti-discrimination policy to include discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity. The new policy is the first of its kind in Mississippi schools. "I'm so glad this is all over. I won't ever get my prom back, but it's worth it if it changes things at my school," McMillen, who was backed by the ACLU, said in a statement. "I hope this means that in the future students at my school will be treated fairly. I know there are students and teachers who want to ...

Crazy Costumes Come Out of the Closet for Gay Pride

(June 28) -- Forget the holiday season; June is the time of year when people don their gayest apparel. Cities around the world celebrated gay pride parades last weekend, allowing gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and queer communities to come together, often in costume. Revelers marched through New York City, San Francisco, Chicago, Mexico City, Berlin and Guatemala City, among other locations, dressed in elaborate get-ups in all shades of the rainbow. ...

Lesbian Banned From Prom Visits White House

(June 22) -- Constance McMillen's school canceled her senior prom, so she'll be attending an event at the White House instead. Officials at a high school in rural Mississippi did not want McMillen, a lesbian, to take her girlfriend to the prom. So they canceled it. But there is little they could do about the national publicity that ensued. Since the April 2 event was canceled, McMillen has received a slew of invitations to events that certainly rival the Itawamba Agricultural High School prom. Tonight, the recent high school graduate will meet President Barack Obama at gay pride reception at ...

Lesbian Who Sued Over Prom Date Transfers Schools

JACKSON, Miss. (May 20) -- The lesbian who sued her rural school district over its ban of same-sex prom dates has transferred to a school in Mississippi's capital. Constance McMillen told The Associated Press today that she now attends a high school in Jackson, about 180 miles from Itawamba Agricultural High School in Fulton. McMillen filed a federal lawsuit against the Itawamba County School District in March over the district's decision to cancel the prom rather than allow her to bring her girlfriend. Afterward, McMillen said she faced hostility. She won't say which school she now ...

Constance McMillen's South: Land of Sex and Sin

"What's happened to the Bible Belt?" That question was written on a poster plastered on Itawamba Agricultural High School in Fulton, Miss., after Constance McMillen, a lesbian high school student, wanted to take her girlfriend to the spring prom. This weekend, Constance will attend the Second Chance Prom. Its purpose is to create a safe space for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender students and allies, "where everyone feels comfortable being themselves." This is a huge event for several reasons. But the main one: it's out in the open in Tupelo, Miss. – home of the American Family ...

Constance McMillen: Mississippi's Pro-Gay Prom Rebel is a Hero

If there's any justice in this world, then Constance McMillen's name and her story of fierce heroism will be celebrated in the annals of the human rights movement in this country. The 18-year-old senior at Itawamba Agricultural High School in Fulton, Miss., made national headlines last month when her fight with the Itawamba County School District gained significant media traction. McMillen wanted to bring her girlfriend to the high school prom on April 2, but after contacting the school's vice principal last December in hopes of receiving approval, he told her she was not allowed to do so. ...
