The others are identified in court documents as Maroun Saade, Walid Nasr, Corneille Dato, Martin Raouf Bouraima and Francis Sourou Ahissou. WikiLeaks' DEA Exposé: 'Mission Creep' and the War on Drugs

A handful of conservatives have already weighed-in on the latest WikiLeaks revelations regarding the DEA's war on drugs in 63 countries, but I figured I would add my two cents to the debate. First, some background. According to The New York Times: "The Drug Enforcement Administration has been transformed into a global intelligence organization with a reach that extends far beyond narcotics, and an eavesdropping operation so expansive it has to fend off foreign politicians who want to use it against their political enemies, according to secret diplomatic cables." In reading the story, the ...

'War on Drugs' Gives Way to the Dangerous New Face of Narco-Politics

'War on Drugs' Gives Way to the Dangerous New Face of Narco-Politics

A shotgun blast of news this year shredded what most Americans believe about what used to be called the "war on drugs" -- that it was being fought to curb what were seen as simply criminal enterprises. Instead, it left us all facing the new dangers of narco-politics, whether it is cartels challenging governments and attacking social institutions, capitalizing on corruption, or involvement in the drug trade by terrorist groups. As a veteran California law enforcement officer told Politics Daily: "What we're seeing in Mexico is cartels as new 'state making' agencies." That's politics, even if, ...

DEA Cracks Down on Synthetic Pot

DEA Cracks Down on Synthetic Pot

(Nov. 24) -- The Drug Enforcement Administration will ban the sale of five chemicals used to make synthetic marijuana as part of a crackdown on the manufactured high. The ban on the synthetic pot ingredients will go into effect in 30 days, the DEA said in a statement. The chemicals are JWH-018, JWH-073, JWH-200, CP-47,497 and cannabicyclohexanol. Synthetic pot is made by spraying plant material with chemicals that mimic the mind-altering high of THC, the active ingredient in marijuana. Many of these chemicals have never been approved for human consumption. "Makers of these harmful ...

Accused 'Merchant of Death' Arms Dealer Has Day in Court

(Nov. 17) -- In the eyes of Russian officials, Viktor Bout is an innocent businessman being railroaded -- quite contrary to the American view that he's a cunning and dangerous arms dealer worthy of the moniker "Merchant of Death." Clad in black T-shirt and black sweat pants, Bout briefly appeared this afternoon in U.S. District Court in Manhattan, represented by a federal defender. He entered a not guilty plea and was ordered held without bail pending his next court appearance, set for Jan. 10. DEA / AP Russian arms trafficking suspect Viktor Bout is shown in U.S. custody Tuesday. "Yes, ...

Rogue DEA Informant Lived in 2 Worlds

Rogue DEA Informant Lived in 2 Worlds

(Nov. 8) -- In the beginning, it seems, even David Headley wasn't sure where his sympathies lay. The rogue American informant, who pleaded guilty to plotting the deadly 2008 terror attacks in Mumbai, India, and is awaiting sentencing, has always lived between two worlds, working as an informant for the Drug Enforcement Administration even as he began to wage holy war against the United States. In the end, though, American authorities say, he chose sides. Headley, who was born in Washington, D.C., but lived in Pakistan until he was a teenager, meandered his way through life to become a ...

Oops! Obama Offends DEA With Drug War Comments

WASHINGTON (Oct. 14) -- President Barack Obama insulted -- albeit inadvertently -- the folks at the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration today by mentioning the FBI instead of their agency in remarks about the war on drugs. At a town hall meeting in Washington aired on MTV, the president told a group of young people that his administration is serious about "federal drug enforcement." Jim Watson, AFP / Getty Images President Barack Obama inadvertently insulted DEA agents when he gave credit to the FBI for fighting the war on drugs during a town hall meeting broadcast on MTV. But, he added, ...

Motorist Beaten by DEA Agent Is Awarded $833,250

(Sept. 22) -- The judge called it a case of "road rage" -- a hot-tempered DEA agent who lost control after a minor collision in 2003 and beat the other driver, leaving him with life-changing head injuries and emotional scars. On Sept. 17, U.S. District Judge Julie A. Robinson, who presided over the civil trial against the federal government, awarded the beaten driver, Barron R. Bowling, $833,250. The Drug Enforcement Administration and the U.S. attorney's office in Kansas said they were reviewing the judge's written ruling involving the agent, Timothy McCue, who still works for the ...

Marijuana 'Megafarms' Busted in Ohio; Ties to Mexican Drug Cartels Suspected

(Sept. 22) -- Authorities in Ohio destroyed two marijuana farms outside of Columbus and arrested 11 Mexicans in connection with the operation on Monday. The farms, which were about 90 miles apart, held a total of 2,500 plants with a street value of approximately $5 million, the state attorney general's office announced. Authorities believe the pot plantations could have ties to Mexican drug cartels, which have been planting crops in the U.S. in recent years. This summer, 30,000 marijuana plants were discovered on two plots of land south of Dallas. Earlier this month, authorities in Colorado ...
