Russ Feingold Faces Tight Wisconsin Senate Race with GOP Newcomer

Three-term Democrat Russ Feingold finds himself locked in a statistical tie with Republican newcomer Ron Johnson in Wisconsin's Senate race, according to a Rasmussen Reports poll conducted June 21. Johnson, a plastics manufacturer, won the endorsement of the Republican party at the state GOP convention in May -- a surprise, especially since he formally entered the race only a week before the gathering. The other candidates who had been in the race were running far behind Feingold in early general election match-ups and, for a while, it looked like the only threat to Feingold would be if ...

Russ Feingold May Face Tough Race Against GOP Newcomer in Wisconsin

Earlier in the campaign cycle, it looked like the only way Republicans had a chance of unseating three-term Democratic Sen. Russ Feingold in Wisconsin was if former Gov. Tommy Thompson got in the race. Thompson didn't do it, but a new poll finds that businessman Ron Johnson, who was endorsed by Wisconsin Republicans last week, is running neck-and-neck with Feingold. Feingold leads Johnson by a bare 46 to 44 percent with 3 percent preferring another candidate and 6 percent undecided, according to a Rasmussen Reports poll conducted May 25. The margin of error is 4.5 points. Johnson won the ...

Eight percent are undecided and the margin of error is 4 points. Two other recent surveys -- Public Policy Polling and Rasmussen Reports --have shown the race to be close with Feingold ahead in one and Thompson in the other, but both by amounts within the margins of error. A third poll, by Wisconsin Policy Research poll earlier in the month, had Thompson ahead ...

GOP Needs Tommy Thompson to Run to Make Wisconsin Senate Race Competitive

The latest poll on the impact former Gov. Tommy Thompson would have on Wisconsin's Senate sweepstakes if he jumps into the race shows Democratic Sen. Russ Feingold with a slim 47 percent to 44 percent lead over Thompson with 9 percent undecided, according to a Public Policy Polling survey conducted March 20-21. The margin of error is 3.7 points. Feingold had led Thompson, 50 percent to 41 percent, in PPP's November poll. The PPP results are similar to a Rasmussen Reports poll conducted March 16 that also showed such a race close (with Thompson leading by 47 percent to 45 percent) but differs ...
