How Old Is Kirsten Gillibrand?

Kirsten Elizabeth Rutnik Gillibrand, former Democratic congresswoman from the 20th District, was appointed by New York Gov. David Paterson to replace Hillary Rodham Clinton as junior U.S. senator for New York. She is the incumbent running in a special election to complete the term. Her opponent is Joseph J. DioGuardi, former Republican congressman (1985-1989) who defeated two Republican candidates for the Senate spot in the primaries. As part of a Politics Daily series providing background about the major candidates in 2010, here are some answers to frequently asked questions about ...

Tax Sugary Drinks? New Yorkers Say 'No' but Leave Some Wiggle Room

Tax Sugary Drinks? New Yorkers Say 'No' but Leave Some Wiggle Room

The idea of imposing taxes on sugary drinks has popped up in several cities and states as a way to counter unhealthy habits -- and raise money for revenue-strapped governments. That has people (and businesses) up in arms in many of these places. By one measure, opposition runs high in New York state. A Quinnipiac University poll, conducted April 6, said voters oppose such a proposal by Gov. David Paterson 66 percent to 31 percent. Paterson's proposal calls for a penny-an-ounce tax that the state Budget Office said would raise $1 billion a year and reduce soda consumption by 15 ...

Paterson: I Was Source in Times Story About Me

(March 18) -- When The New York Times reported that New York Gov. David Paterson intervened in a domestic abuse case involving his top aide, Paterson said the story was based on unsourced claims and unnamed sources. Now, the governor says, he was one of those sources. Paterson told a New York radio station today that he was the source who led the Times to write the story that prompted him to drop his election bid and triggered the resignation of five of his staffers amid calls that he do the same. The Times flatly denies the claim. Chris Hondros, Getty Images New York Gov. David Paterson ...

New York AG Andrew Cuomo Recuses Himself from David Paterson Probes

New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo has removed himself from his office's investigations of Gov. David Paterson and appointed an independent counsel, as he apparently gears up to announce his own gubernatorial run. Cuomo said Thursday that Judith Kaye, the former chief judge of New York's highest court, would lead the inquiries into Paterson's handling of an aide's domestic violence case and whether the governor lied about soliciting World Series tickets. "This is an unfortunate situation and these are unfortunate days," Cuomo told reporters of the scandals surrounding Paterson. As for ...

Majority in Latest Poll Say Paterson Should Finish Term

There have been several polls showing different results on whether New Yorkers believe Gov. David Paterson should finish out the rest of his term despite allegations that he intervened in a domestic abuse case involving one of his aides. The Siena Research Institute has come up yet with another result that differs from earlier surveys. In a poll conducted March 7, 55 percent say Paterson should finish his terms while 37 percent say he should resign, with 9 percent undecided. Only 21 percent would support the state legislature moving to impeach him if he does not resign. Last week, Quinnipiac ...

Support for Paterson Finishing Out Term in New York Drops Sharply

The number of New Yorkers who believe Gov. David Paterson should finish out his term has dropped sharply as new revelations continue to emerge about his efforts to get a woman not to go public with charges of abuse against one of his top aides, according to a Quinnipiac University poll conducted March 3-4. Quinnipiac says that 46 percent now say Paterson should stay on the job compared to 42 percent who believe he should resign, with 12 percent undecided. In its March 3 poll, 61 percent said he should finish his term, 31 percent said he should resign and 9 percent were undecided. "Support ...

Key Paterson Aide Steps Down, Saying 'Conscience' Prompted Resignation

Pressure on New York Gov. David A. Paterson to step down is growing as key aide Peter E. Kaufmann has resigned, saying he cannot "in good conscience" continue working for the beleaguered governor. Kaufmann quit Thursday after being interviewed for several hours by prosecutors from the office of New York Attorney General Andrew M. Cuomo, who is investigating charges that Paterson improperly intervened in a domestic violence case involving another of his aides, the New York Times reported. Kaufmann told investigators he came to doubt the truth of what the governor was telling him to tell ...

Scandals Break (and Break and Break) in New York

NEW YORK (March 3) -- Political scandals are piling up at an astonishing pace in New York, even by the standards of a state distinguished for dysfunction. Within just a few hours today, three scandals involving New York politicians emerged, each with its own twist. Gov. David Paterson, who is holding onto his seat as serious allegations that he intervened in a domestic abuse case on behalf of an aide are investigated, faced a separate set of charges for allegedly accepting free World Series tickets. Rep. Charles Rangel, who has been accused of a variety of ethics charges involving taxes, ...

New Yorkers Believe Paterson Should Finish His Term, Two of Three Polls Find

Two polls found a majority of New Yorkers believe Gov. David Paterson should finish out his term despite overwhelmingly negative job approval ratings and revelations that he tried to influence an assault case involving one of his aides. A third poll had New Yorkers narrowly in favor of Paterson resigning. A Quinnipiac University poll conducted March 1-2 found that 61 percent said he should stay, while 31 percent said he should resign, with 9 percent undecided. Sixty-two percent -- including 58 percent of Democrats -- disapproved of the way Paterson is doing his job, while 24 percent approved ...

Head of New York State Police Retires Amid Scandal

ALBANY, N.Y. (March 2) -- An unfolding scandal threatening Gov. David Paterson and his administration claimed its second public safety official Tuesday when the head of the New York State Police casually told a television reporter that he was retiring, partly because of intense media scrutiny. Superintendent Harry Corbitt had acknowledged in February that a State Police official had contact with a woman who had accused a top Paterson aide of assaulting her on Halloween in New York City's Bronx borough. Soon after, the woman dropped the domestic violence complaint against the aide, David ...
