By Tom Diemer - Politics DailyVermont's Democratic voters, unimpressed with anti-incumbent sentiment in other parts of the country, chose Sen. Patrick Leahy to run for a seventh term Tuesday night. In a tight three-way contest for governor, state senator Peter Shumlin claimed victory but his margin was only about 200 votes. Leahy, 70, easily defeated Navy veteran Daniel Freilich and will be a strong favorite against Republican Len Britton in the November election. Race for Vermont Governor's Seat Seen as a Toss-Up
By Bruce Drake - Politics DailyDemocrat Deb Markowitz and Republican Brian Dubie are in a close race to succeed GOP Gov. Jim Douglas, who announced last year he would not seek another term, according to a WCAX/Research 2000 poll conducted Feb. 14-16. Republicans feared that Douglas' decision not to run would put the seat in play and the poll seems to bear that out: Dubie, a four-term lieutenant governor, is below 50 percent in match-ups against five Democratic hopefuls. Markowitz, Vermont's secretary of state, leads Dubie by 43 percent to 41 percent with 16 percent undecided. The margin of error is 5 points. Markowitz's ...
