Democrat Deb Markowitz and Republican Brian Dubie are in a close race to succeed GOP Gov. Jim Douglas, who announced last year he would not seek another term, according to a WCAX/Research 2000 poll conducted Feb. 14-16. Republicans feared that Douglas' decision not to run would put the seat in play and the poll seems to bear that out: Dubie, a four-term lieutenant governor, is below 50 percent in match-ups against five Democratic hopefuls.
