RNC Raises $5.7 Million in January Under New Chairman Reince Priebus

When Reince Priebus was elected to head the Republican National Committee last month, he vowed to boost fundraising, especially from wealthy donors, and so far he's done exactly that. The RNC pulled in $5.7 million in January, and its new chairman said $3.5 million of that came in after his election Jan. 14, Roll Call reported. "We owe a lot of our success to major donors who helped us reach 180 percent of our monthly major donor goal, and we were able to accomplish that in the last two weeks of January," Priebus (pictured) said in a statement, adding that the committee still has "a lot of ...

Both Parties' Campaign Committees End Election Year in Debt

The GOP won big in the midterm election, but both parties are running about even when it comes to the amount of debt their campaign committees racked up this year. Both the Republican National Committee and the Democratic National Committee filed reports this week that showed they are each about $15 million in the red. The RNC is worse off financially because it only has about $1.9 million in the bank to pay its bills. The committee has informed vendors that they would not be paid on time, The New York Times reported Friday. The DNC reported having $9.7 million cash on hand. The Times ...

Miscast as Party Leaders, Time for Michael Steele and Tim Kaine to Go?

Miscast as Party Leaders, Time for Michael Steele and Tim Kaine to Go?

Republican Party chairman Michael Steele gave his fellow Republicans plenty of reasons for apoplexy in the last two years, and the first campaign to oust him is already under way. But let's face it, both party leaders were miscast. Tim Kaine, the former Virginia governor, became chairman of the Democratic National Committee under pressure from his good friend Barack Obama, even though he still had a year to go as governor of a purple swing state. The shared philosophy of the two men was evident not just in what they said at their news conference, but in the blue and red striped tie that Kaine ...

Did the Democrats' Loss of Faith Lose Them the House?

Did the Democrats' Loss of Faith Lose Them the House?

Of the many reasons cited for the Election Day "shellacking" administered by Republicans to President Obama and the Democrats, perhaps none is as puzzling to political analysts -- or as maddening to religious progressives who put so much faith and work into Obama's success -- than the Democrats' failure to mobilize the Religious Left and reach out to conservative believers. To be sure, little was going the Democrats' way this fall, and it would have taken something on the order of an Old Testament miracle -- say, the sun standing still until employment numbers improved -- to forestall ...

Under Fire From Democrats, Chamber of Commerce Helps Blue Dogs

Under Fire From Democrats, Chamber of Commerce Helps Blue Dogs

Republicans and their allies in business are howling that a Democratic charge that "secret foreign money" is fueling GOP campaigns is a dog that just won't hunt. Now the U.S. Chamber of Commerce is helping conservative Blue Dog Democrats in a bid to prove it is bipartisan after all. The powerful business lobby quietly began running ads last week in the congressional districts of 10 endangered Democrats who opposed President Obama's health-care bill or have parted ways on taxes and other fiscal issues with Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi. The "voter education" ads were first spotted by ...

Democratic Ad: Business Group Aids GOP With Foreign Funds

Democratic Ad: Business Group Aids GOP With Foreign Funds

WASHINGTON (Oct. 10) - A new Democratic TV ad all but accuses the U.S. Chamber of Commerce of using foreign funds to secretly back Republican congressional candidates, igniting a furious round of denials and counter-accusations from Republicans. Democrats presented no evidence to substantiate the charge. The use of foreign funds for U.S. campaign activities is prohibited. The Democratic National Committee ad issued barely three weeks from elections in which their hold on House and Senate majorities appears shaky, calls the chamber "shills for big business" and says it is spending millions ...

Charlotte a Step Closer to Bringing 2012 Democratic Convention South?

Charlotte a Step Closer to Bringing 2012 Democratic Convention South?

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Four cities are officially in the running to host the 2012 Democratic National Convention. But after a recent site visit from about a dozen Democratic Party representatives, Charlotte Mayor Anthony Foxx likes his city's chances. Not that he would say one negative word about St. Louis, Cleveland or Minneapolis. He would rather talk about Charlotte's "great new facilities" and "vibrant, can-do attitude." "For almost an entire generation, the Democratic Party has had a hands off attitude toward the South," Foxx told me on Friday. Though it was barely 8 a.m., we watched as ...

Supreme Court Upholds Limits on 'Soft Money' to Political Parties

Supreme Court Upholds Limits on 'Soft Money' to Political Parties

The Supreme Court has let stand limits on so-called soft money contributions going to national political parties, but not designated for any particular candidates. The restrictions, part of the 2002 McCain-Feingold campaign finance law, have been credited with restricting what had been a freewheeling repository for campaign money -- virtually unregulated funds that could be moved around internally and used indirectly to fuel campaigns. The high court, without comment on Tuesday, decided not to hear an appeal from the U.S. District Court of the District of Columbia which ruled that the soft ...

DNC Rolls Out Ads Supporting Democrats Who Voted for Health Reform

The Democratic National Committee announced it will begin running ads Thursday praising House Democrats who voted for the health care reform bill and calling out Republicans who opposed it. The ads -- 25 on television and 10 on radio -- will run in markets across the country, the DNC said in an e-mailed statement. The "Hands Off Our Health Care" radio campaign goes after 10 GOP members of Congress who are working to repeal the reform bill President Obama signed into law Tuesday. The ads are tailored for specific Republicans and criticize each for voting "against ending discrimination based ...

The Expat Factor: Making Overseas Votes Count

The Expat Factor: Making Overseas Votes Count

LONDON -- When the large brown manila envelope arrived in my mailbox, I was momentarily flummoxed. "What's this?" I wondered. And then I saw the return address: Illinois State Board of Elections. It was my ballot for the Feb. 2 primary. "Phew!" I thought. "Thank goodness it arrived on time." There are as many as 6 million Americans living abroad, with an estimated 4.9 million of voting age. But although overseas Americans have had the right to vote for decades, the process has historically been riddled with imperfections. According to Stephen Ansolabehere, a political scientist at Harvard ...
