Times Square Bomb Attempt Seen as Failure for Homeland Security, Poll Says

A plurality of voters think the attempted bombing in Times Square was a failure for the Homeland Security Department because the suspect was able to leave his car in Times Square with explosives in it, and unlike the case of the would-be Christmas Day bomber, the public is divided on whether Faisal Shahzad should be tried as an enemy combatant, according to a Fox News/Opinion Dynamics poll conducted May 4-5. Forty-seven percent labeled security efforts a failure because of Shahzad's ability to get the bomb-laden SUV into a busy part of the city and park it before a T-shirt vendor saw smoke ...

Three More Domestic Spying Programs Revealed

The Department of Homeland Security is acknowledging the existence of three more government programs charged with spying on American citizens in the aftermath of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. The programs -- Pantheon, Pathfinder and Organizational Shared Space -- used a variety of software tools to gather and analyze information about Americans, according to documents obtained by the Center for Investigative Reporting. The DHS turned over the papers in response to a December 2008 Freedom of Information Act request. The documents shed new light on the proliferation of domestic ...

Homeland Security Avatars Simulate Stadium Stampede

Homeland Security Avatars Simulate Stadium Stampede

(March 16) -- Imagine 70,000 people trying to exit a sports stadium after a bomb explodes during the game. That sort of mass chaos is precisely the idea behind a new computer program that tries to predict what would happen in a real-world terrorist attack or other emergency involving tens of thousands of people attending a major sporting event. It's not quite James Cameron's "Avatar" movie, but SportEvac, a computer program sponsored by the Department of Homeland Security, uses sophisticated avatars to simulate how tens of thousands of sports fan might react to a crisis -- such as a suicidal ...

Was the Texas Plane Attack 'Terrorism'?

(Feb. 19) -- A familiar debate has re-emerged following the premeditated crash of an airplane into an Austin, Texas, office building: How do we distinguish an act of terrorism from other, more commonplace crimes? Authorities said Joe Stack deliberately flew his small plane into the Echelon 1 building, which housed an office of the Internal Revenue Service. Stack, who's full name is Andrew Joseph Stack III, and one person in the building were killed. As with the case of Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan, the Army psychiatrist charged with killing 13 people during a shooting rampage at Fort Hood in ...

Department of Homeland Security Officers Lose Nearly 300 Guns

Department of Homeland Security officers lost nearly 300 guns over a two-year span, leading to disciplinary actions and increased training, according to a new federal report. An inquiry by the department's inspector general found that most of the weapons -- including handguns, shotguns and military rifles -- went missing as a result of negligence on the part of employees. Nearly 200 of the guns were lost in "bowling alleys, public restrooms, unlocked cars and other unsecure areas, with some ending up in the hands of felons," USA Today reported. The report outlines 289 missing firearms from ...

Illegal Immigrant Population in U.S. Drops Significantly

The number of illegal immigrants in the United States fell to 10.8 million last year, from 11.6 million in 2008, according to a new report by the Department of Homeland Security. It was the sharpest drop in years and some analysts say it is largely due to undocumented immigrants being deported or voluntarily leaving because jobs are hard to come by during the ongoing recession, The Los Angeles Times reported. Other researchers believe the decline is because fewer illegal immigrants are entering the U.S. The only state to see its number of undocumented residents go up in 2009 was Georgia, ...

As Cyberwar Threat Looms, Officials Stay Mum

(Feb 3) -- The head of the intelligence community warned Congress this week that cyberwar is on the horizon, with terrorists and criminals exploiting new capabilities that could "wreak havoc" on the United States. The question now is, what does the U.S. government intend to do about it? "Terrorist groups and their sympathizers have expressed interest in using cyber means to target the United States and its citizens," Dennis Blair, the director of national intelligence, warned a Senate panel Tuesday. Blair pointed to the recent attacks against Google as a "wake-up call." But secrecy and ...

Bulk of Anti-Terror Funding Pegged to 9/11 Suspect

(Feb. 1) -- At first glance, the $213 million that the Obama administration wants to add to the federal budget in anti-terrorism funding for high-risk cities next year seems like a substantial increase. It would boost the pot of urban homeland security money by 24 percent over the current level. But a closer look at the budget finds that almost all of the increase – $200 million – can be traced largely to one man: Khalid Sheikh Mohammed. www.muslm.net / AP A lion's share of the $213 million President Obama is asking for in anti-terrorism funding for high-risk cities next year can ...

Haitian Nationals in the U.S. Get Temporary Protected Status

The Department of Homeland Security announced Sunday that it will granted special temporary protected status to Haitian nationals who were in the United States on or before Jan. 12, 2010. "This is a disaster of historic proportions, and this designation will allow eligible Haitian nationals in the United States to continue living and working in our country for the next 18 months," department chief Janet Napolitano said in a statement. "Providing a temporary refuge for Haitian nationals who are currently in the United States and whose personal safety would be endangered by returning to Haiti ...

TSA Puts 5 Employees On Leave Over Online Posting

WASHINGTON (Dec. 9) -- Five Transportation Security Administration employees have been placed on administrative leave since it was discovered that sensitive guidelines about airport passenger screening were posted on the Internet. The move was disclosed as senators questioned administration officials Wednesday about the second embarrassing security flap at the Homeland Security Department in as many weeks. The Secret Service, also part of the sprawling department, is investigating how a couple of would-be reality TV stars were able to get into a White House state dinner without an ...
