New Federal Aviation Rules Could Mean More Canceled Flights

Late last year the government announced it would impose multimillion-dollar fines against airlines that leave passengers stranded on the tarmac for more than three hours. Aviation experts have studied the potential impacts of those fines and determined they could lead to more flight cancellations, USA Today reported. The Department of Transportation said airlines would pay $27,500 per passenger for long delays, fines that could reach into the millions for full flights. Transportation Department Limits Runway Delays to 3 Hours

In response to several recent incidents that left airline passengers stranded on delayed planes, the U.S. Department of Transportation announced Monday that airlines will now have to allow customers to deplane after three hours on the tarmac. "Airline passengers have rights, and these new rules will require airlines to live up to their obligation to treat their customers fairly," Secretary LaHood said in a statement.
