Kwame Kilpatrick, Former Mayor of Detroit, Indicted on Corruption Charges

Ex-Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick has been indicted by a federal grand jury on corruption, fraud and tax charges. The 19-count indictment, handed down Wednesday afternoon, accuses the already disgraced, criminally convicted former mayor of using his nonprofit organization, the Kilpatrick Civic Fund, to funnel money to family, friends and his own bank accounts. Prosecutors say the money, which was supposed to go to voter education efforts, was instead spent on yoga and golf lessons for Kilpatrick and his family, the Detroit Free Press reported. If he is convicted of the new charges, he ...

Ex-Detroit Mayor Faces Up to 5 Years in Prison

Ex-Detroit Mayor Faces Up to 5 Years in Prison

(May 25) -- A judge today slapped former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick with a sentence of as much as five years in prison for violating probation, saying his initial jailing "did nothing to rehabilitate" him. Wayne County Circuit Court Judge David Groner's sentencing of Kilpatrick to 18 months to five years in state prison was much tougher than the four-month sentence he drew after pleading guilty two years ago for obstructing justice in a scandal that drove him from office. Gasps could be heard in the courtroom today as Groner overrode the recommended 17-month sentencing guideline and ...

Ex-Detroit Mayor Gets Up to 5 Years in Prison

DETROIT (May 25) -- Former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick was sentenced to up to five years in prison Tuesday for violating the terms of his probation stemming from his conviction for lying under oath about an affair with his chief of staff. Kilpatrick, 39, asked Judge David Groner to show him compassion during the hearing, but Groner said "that ship has sailed." Groner said Kilpatrick would have to serve at least one-and-a-half years in prison, but that he would be credited for 120 days of time served from his original sentence. He is still obligated to pay back the remaining balance of his ...

The Kilpatrick Carnival Continues

The Kilpatrick Carnival Continues

Fresh out of jail with a $50,000 bond and an electronic tether (for violating his previous bond, imposed for perjury, misconduct and obstruction of justice), Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick was immediately charged with two felony assault charges. It seems that Kilpatrick assaulted a public officer attempting to serve a subpoena on a friend of (and potential witness against) Kilpatrick. The charges carry a possible two year incarceration penalty. Kilpatrick has become a comic embarrassment to political service - a thug masquerading as a mayor. The people of Detroit and the Democratic party bring ...

Detroit Mayor Goes To Jail

Detroit Mayor Goes To Jail

Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick has been sentenced to jail for taking a trek up to Canada - in violation of the terms of his bond. Kilpatrick and a former (female) top aide are presently charged with perjury, misconduct and obstruction of justice. It seems that a sneaky little provision of Kilpatrick's bond held that he would not venture out of the country. Kilpatrick portrayed himself as a martyred civil servant at his bond-violation hearing. In fact, the mayor was in Canada on official business - attempting "to save the city and close a $300 million deficit facing the city." Placing himself ...

Democrats Lose a Golden Child

By  Justin Paulette - Politics Daily
Democrats Lose a Golden Child

Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick, the state's youngest elected leader and a rising star amongst Democratic ranks, was charged with perjury earlier today with regard to a sexual affair with an aide. In Clintonesque fashion, Mayor Kilpatrick's "personal affairs" will now be aired before the public eye. The only question seems to be whether the mayor will hold onto his office until mandatorally expelled in accordance with a felony conviction, or whether he will forgo the spectacle and quietly resign. As a final note, the lengthy AP story apparently could not find room for one little, surely ...
