Taco Bell Tests Taco Shell Made Entirely of Doritos

Chips on the side have nothing on this fast-food creation. Mexican chain restaurant Taco Bell is reportedly testing the Doritos Locos Tacos, a taco shell made entirely of nacho cheese Doritos. "Shut the front door and hand me a bib and some wet wipes to wipe the flavored dust from my trembling mouth!" blogger MB Quirk celebrated in The Consumerist. The buzz surrounding the cheesy creation stems from the discovery of a July video making the viral rounds across the Web. In the footage, the willing taste tester exclaims that the taco is "everything I expected and more." But not everyone is ...

Doritos, Pepsi Max and Religion: An Unholy Mix in Super Bowl Ad Contest

Doritos, Pepsi Max and Religion: An Unholy Mix in Super Bowl Ad Contest

The NFL playoffs are still underway. But I can already tell you that neither Michael Vick nor any quarterback named Manning will play in Super Bowl XLV. And neither will a particular chips-and-soda ad. The veteran quarterbacks got beat by better teams. The ad, however, was sacked by a rookie mistake: A misreading by the writer about the acceptable use of religion and humor. The ad was actually an entry to a contest run by Doritos and Pepsi Max. The challenge: Make an ad, post it to the contest site, and let people watch and vote for their favorites. The winner gets aired during the Super ...

Dorito-Shaped UFOs Spotted Over Britain

Dorito-Shaped UFOs Spotted Over Britain

(Nov. 22) -- Flying saucers are one thing, but flying snack chips? England appears to be the latest hot spot for UFOs shaped like triangles or, if you will, Doritos. Several sightings of a chip-shaped object have occurred over the U.K. in the past few years, the Daily Mail reports. The latest report emerged last week when a quality inspector, Munesh Mistry, witnessed a triangular object -- dubbed locally as the "Dudley Dorito" from the British town of Dudley -- in the sky near his Tipton, West Midlands, home. Mistry said he and a friend saw "an amazing fast-moving and silent craft in the ...

Chew on This: You Aren't Eating Enough Bugs

Chew on This: You Aren't Eating Enough Bugs

(July 12) -- Americans aren't eating enough insects, and that bugs foodies like Andrew Zimmern. Zimmern, host of the popular Travel Channel series "Bizarre Foods," travels the world tasting the local vittles in various countries. Some are quite foreign to American taste buds, and, at least in the case of insects, he thinks Yanks are missing out on some good eating. For instance, one of Zimmern's favorite snacks is a handful of chapulines, a taste treat from the Mexican state of Oaxaca that combines dry-roasted grasshoppers with lime and chili. Another is an Ecuadoran dish where coconut grubs ...

Doritos Fake-Out Shows Internet Scams Thriving

(June 17) -- Internet scam detective Audri Lanford's phone is ringing off the hook these days over, of all things, Doritos. A fake coupon for a free bag of Doritos has gone viral, leaving consumers angry when they can't cash it in, retailers holding the bag if they do redeem it and Frito-Lay dealing with damage to its image. The scam problem has increased in the past few weeks as more and more people e-mailed the coupon to one another. And though a $5 bag of chips may not sound like a big problem, Frito-Lay spokeswoman Aurora Gonzalez said the losses could end up in the multimillions: The ...

Is the Resurrection Funny? One Church Has a Super Bowl Bet on It

Is the Resurrection Funny? One Church Has a Super Bowl Bet on It

Tim Tebow vs. ManCrunch has become the dominant Super Bowl story line in the run-up to Sunday's championship game. The decision by CBS to broadcast the pro-life story of Tebow's birth vs. the decision to bar ManCrunch's gay dating service spot (as the network has done with other gay-themed commercials) has been parsed many places, most ably here by my PD colleague Jeff Weiss. But how about the Doritos ad that features a guy inside a closed casket filled with chips, watching the big game on a small TV -- all unbeknown to the tearful mourners sobbing at the high church funeral? The dude inside ...
