Click here to visit the new home of Politics Daily! For the third year in a row, President Obama filled out his "March Madness" bracket on ESPN, but this time he's taking some heavy criticism -- and not for his picks. On Twitter, Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus took the first shot: "How can @BarackObama say he is leading when [he] puts his NCAA bracket over the budget & other pressing issues?" Citing crises ranging from the multiple disasters in Japan to unrest in the Middle East and the budget deadlock in Congress, RNC spokeswoman Kirsten Kukowski said Wednesday, "With all of those pressing issues on the president's ...
Was it something she wore? Veteran sportscaster Hannah Storm became a trending topic on Twitter today after the reporter appeared on the set of her show wearing what some found to be yet another provocative outfit. The subject of Storm's attire and its affect on ESPN's mostly male audience has been around for some time. "Pardon the Interruption's" Tony Kornheiser was suspended after going off on one of Storm's outfits, calling the plaid miniskirt and red go-go boot combination "horrifying." The LA Times even jumped into the debate with an article titled, "Tony Kornheiser Suspended: But Are ...
There will be an MLS schedule on Thursday, finally. But don't expect all the confusion to be cleared up, and don't expect the pressure on the league to decrease. The list of dates and opponents MLS unveils will leave a host of unanswered questions about the upcoming season, as well as the more distant future. And of course, it will be subject to change. The regular season begins in five weeks (the Los Angeles Galaxy will visit the Seattle Sounders on March 15, and the rest of the clubs will kick off four days later), and the fact that clubs and fans still don't have a full fixture list to ...
Here are some things we learned from Monday's conference call to announce ESPN's hiring of Urban Meyer as a college football analyst: Meyer doesn't want to criticize anyone. And he doesn't want to formally cut his ties to Florida, the school he coached to two national titles before announcing his departure in December. In fact, he apparently wants to continue assisting the school in raising funds, even while he may be called on to comment on the team and school's doings. And doggone it if it's all OK with ESPN. In a 30-minute conference call with reporters Monday afternoon, Meyer and Norby ...
Once Urban Meyer stepped down for good as Florida's head football coach in November, the clock began counting down to when some broadcast entity would bring the man who won two national titles in six years into the fold as an analyst. It just seemed too obvious that the youthful, telegenic Meyer would make a pit stop in a booth or studio before heading back to the sidelines. And sure enough, the most likely suitor, ESPN, announced Monday that it has signed Meyer to join its ranks, with his first appearance coming during Wednesday's marathon ESPNU show for National Signing Day. Meyer ...
Hannah Storm, arguably the most visible woman at ESPN, has signed a contract extension that will bolster her visibility, the channel announced Wednesday. Storm, who came to the Worldwide Leader from CBS News in 2008 to launch the late-morning "SportsCenter", has inked a deal, the length and financial terms of which were not disclosed. However, ESPN was all too happy to announce that Storm, who began hosting NBA coverage, will also be on-site host for the channel's coverage of the Super Bowl, Wimbledon and the U.S. Open, as well as the NBA Finals. Storm will also make appearances on "The ...
More than a few former ESPN types have traveled a great distance, in television parlance, to escape the constraints of the Worldwide Leader's studios, from Keith Olbermann's journey to news to Craig Kilborn's excursion to late night television and subsequent obscurity. SportsCenter anchor Chris McKendry's jaunt to Melbourne to co-anchor the channel's Australian Open coverage represents the best of both worlds. She gets an all-expenses paid escape from Bristol for a couple of weeks as well as getting to keep her day job. Not that anchoring the midday edition of everyone's favorite sports news ...
Dick Vitale, college basketball's most identifiable television analyst as well as its biggest cheerleader, will remain with ESPN for another four years, the company announced Wednesday. Vitale, who has been with the Worldwide Leader since shortly after it launched in September 1979, will stay with the company through the 2014-15 season, when he will be 75. In a statement issued through the company, Vitale said, "There is nothing greater than walking into an arena and feeling the excitement and energy of a big-time college basketball game. "I can't thank ESPN enough for allowing me to be a ...
In a cruel twist of timing, the eyes of the nation focused on Arizona on Monday – not because of the Tucson shooting rampage Saturday that left six dead and 14 wounded. Instead, the center of attention had moved by Monday afternoon about 125 miles north to Glendale, where the BCS national championship game was played. Certainly the day was filled with reflection and remembrances related to the devastating attack on U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords and people who had stopped at a shopping center to visit with her. "Arizona is in pain, yes," Gov. Jan Brewer said Monday. "Our grief is ...
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- Mike Bellotti estimates that he recruited "80 percent" of the players on the current Oregon roster. But he's taking no credit for the Ducks' success, which unfolds in its final chapter tonight in the BCS Championship Game against Auburn. "I deserve absolutely zero credit," Bellotti said at Sunday's ESPN press conference. "I didn't coach anything this year. I put these guys in a place a couple of years ago and they have done a great job building on that." Bellotti, who coached Oregon from 1995 to 2008, is now working in the broadcast booth as an analyst for ESPN. But ...
