Barack Obama Linked to Figure in Pay-to-Play Investigation

    By  Mark Impomeni
    %PostTitle%

President-elect Barack Obama received more than $30,000 in campaign contributions from David Rubin, the central figure in a federal probe into an alleged pay-to-play scandal involving New Mexico state contracts. The investigation forced Obama's nominee to head the Commerce Department, New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson (D), to withdraw from the confirmation process earlier this week. Obama accepted the federal maximum from Rubin, $2,300, and more than $28,000 that went to a special fund shared by the Obama campaign and the Democratic National Committee.Rubin is under investigation for ...

Minnesota Senate Recount Tainted, Coleman to Challenge Certification

    By  Mark Impomeni
    %PostTitle%

As expected, the Minnesota Canvassing Board today certified the results of the Board's recount of the Minnesota Senate election, declaring Democrat Al Franken to be the winner by 225 votes. The Canvassing Board's action, however is far from the final word on the election. Minnesota law says that an election result cannot be certified by the Secretary of State until all court challenges to the outcome have been adjudicated. With the result so close, and with strong evidence of improper counting by the canvassing board, incumbent Senator Norm Coleman (R) vowed to contest the Board's decision in ...

GOP to Play by Harry Reid's Rules with Al Franken

    By  Mark Impomeni
    %PostTitle%

When the newly appointed Senator-designate from Illinois, Roland Burris (D), reports to Washington next Tuesday, majority Democrats will refuse to seat him. Lacking clear Constitutional authority to block Burris from taking his seat, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) has devised a plan to deny Burris his seat based on an obscure Senate rule. Senate Rule 2 says that any new Senator must present a certificate of election or appointment signed by both his home state governor and secretary of state. Soon after disgraced Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich (D) appointed Burris, Illinois ...

Media Darling Barack Obama Bristles at Media Spotlight

    By  Mark Impomeni
    %PostTitle%

President-elect Barack Obama, arguably the recipient of the least critical media coverage of any candidate for president in U.S. history, has suddenly become less than enamored of the press coverage he and his family are receiving as they vacation in Hawaii. Late last week, Obama left the press gaggle behind when he took his daughters to a water park, breaking with the protocol that representatives of the media travel with the president or president-elect at all times. When the press eventually caught up with the Obamas, the president-elect chided a Washington Post pool reporter for writing ...

    GOP 3 for 3 in Post-Election Run-Off Contests

    By  Mark Impomeni

The Republican has not had much to celebrate recently, suffering historic election losses in two consecutive elections and losing the White House. But since Election Day, Republican candidates have won three consecutive run-off elections, giving some in the party hope that Republicans' future political prospects are not as bleak as they seemed just one month ago.The GOP run at success began with Sen. Saxby Chambliss' resounding win over Democrat Jim Martin in the Georgia Senate run-off. Chambliss had garnered just .2% less than the required 50% on Election Day, forcing the rematch. ...

For Barack Obama, Breaking a Campaign Promise Easier than Ending Iraq War

    By  Mark Impomeni
    %PostTitle%

In yet another example of President-elect Barack Obama learning that governing is much harder than campaigning, Obama is poised to abandon his campaign promise to end the Iraq War within 16 months of his inauguration. Obama has already raised eyebrows in some quarters of the anti-war left with his selections for Secretary of State and Defense, the top two Cabinet posts in his national security team. His choice for State, former rival Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-NY), voted to authorize the war, and was bitterly opposed in the Democratic primary by anti-war groups on the basis of that vote. Obama's ...

Georgia Runoff an Early Test for Barack Obama

    By  Mark Impomeni
    %PostTitle%

President-elect Barack Obama faces his first political test today in Georgia, where Democrat Jim Martin is challenging incumbent Republican Sen. Saxby Chambliss in a run-off election to determine the winner of the U.S. Senate race there. Although Obama has not visited Georgia in support of Martin, he has spent some of his political capital on Martin's campaign; sending campaign volunteers from neighboring states to assist in the run-off, and personally recording a radio ad and robocalls for Martin. The effort by Obama is part of the Democratic Party's push to reach 60 votes in the Senate, ...

Barack Obama's Campaign Donors Much Like George Bush's

    By  Mark Impomeni

President-elect Barack Obama built a formidable campaign money machine during the presidential election, raising more money than any single presidential candidate in U.S. history, over $600 million. Obama credited, and the media parrotted, millions of small donors each donating less than $200 for his fund raising prowess. He even referred to this army of contributors as a new kind of public financing system. But a new analysis of Obama's donor base shows that there was no army of small donors. In fact, Obama raised just about the same percentage of his money from small donors as George W. Bush ...

Al Franken Losing Ground in Minnesota Senate Recount

    By  Mark Impomeni
    %PostTitle%

Comedian turned liberal gadfly radio host turned Democratic Senate candidate Al Franken is locked in a tight recount battle with incumbent Republican Senator Norm Coleman. But as the recount is nearing its completion something is happening in Minnesota's biggest Democratic stronghold, Minneapolis, that the Franken campaign likely finds very unfunny. Franken is losing ground. With nearly half of Minneapolis' ballots counted, Coleman holds a slim 170 vote lead over Franken. That total includes more than 80 votes Franken has lost in Minneapolis, where he should have been gaining votes on his ...

Media Cannot Move On From Race Politics

    By  Mark Impomeni
    %PostTitle%

The Associated Press reports on a smattering of racially motivated incidents that have occurred in the weeks after President-elect Barack Obama's victory in the general election. The report focuses on reports of 200 "hate-related incidents" collected by the Southern Poverty Law Center. The AP story terms this collection of fringe actions by fringe elements in American society a "white backlash." It is, of course, no such thing. The AP admits as much in its report, characterizing most post-election incidents as, "little more than juvenile pranks." But the sensationalism with which the AP ...
