Click here to visit the new home of Politics Daily! When the Republican House leadership decided to start the 112th Congress with a reading of the U.S. Constitution, the decision raised complaints in some quarters that it was little more than a political stunt. The New York Times even called it a "presumptuous and self-righteous act." That might be true, if you could be sure that elected officials actually know something about the Constitution. But it turns out that many don't. In fact, elected officials tend to know even less about key provisions of the Constitution than the general public. For five years now, the Intercollegiate Studies ...
A law that would allow Massachusetts to bypass the Electoral College system, making sure it's the popular vote that determines the winner of the presidential election, was approved by the state legislature Tuesday. The bill, which passed on a 28-to-9 vote, now heads to the desk of Democratic Gov. Deval Patrick, who has said he supports the measure, The Boston Globe reported. The legislation was enacted by the Massachusetts House last week. The law would require all 12 of the state's electoral votes be awarded to the presidential candidate who receives the most votes nationally. "What we are ...
By any measure, the British general elections on May 6 are shaping up to be a real nail-biter. The race is very competitive. The outcome is highly uncertain. The implications for Britain's future are profound. And for this American citizen living in London, at least, it's one of the most engaging electoral contests I've ever seen. Don't get me wrong. Like many Americans, I was captivated by the 2008 American presidential race. I understood that a lot was at stake on policy terms. I described how -- in an article I did from London that year -- Americans of all political stripes and classes ...
Obviously, this changes nothing in terms of who won the presidency. But it does mean that Barack Obama's candidacy helped redraw the electoral map even more than anyone thought. The Associated Press is now giving Obama North Carolina, concluding that there aren't enough uncounted ballots left for John McCain to overcome his lead. That win gives Obama 364 Electoral College votes, with Missouri the only state that's too close to call.North Carolina has traditionally been a solid red state, along with Virginia and Indiana, which Obama also won.No Democratic presidential hopeful has won North ...
Barack Obama has been elected the 44th president of the United States. At 11 p.m. on the dot, as West Coast polls closed, the major news networks called the election for the Democratic senator. Obama won California, Hawaii, Oregon, Washington, giving him 324 electoral votes to John McCain's 120.12:25 a.m., Obama had 338 electoral votes to McCain's 156. Signing off for the night...America will wake up to a new day...12 midnight: Obama takes the stage in Grant Park, saying for anyone out there who ever doubted change like this could happen in the United States, or ever doubted what someone in ...
Throw out the polls. All of them. Throw out the ones that show Sen. Barack Obama cruising to a Reaganesque landslide over Sen. John McCain. Throw out the ones that show Sen. McCain making a Trumanesque comeback. Throw out the state polls. Throw out the exit polls, when they are conducted. Throw them all out. The fact is that no pollster truly knows what is going on this election cycle, because this election is unlike any other in the nation's recent history.Never before has there been such a disparity in experience between the two candidates. Sen. John McCain has been in Congress for ...
Here goes:The Giuliani/Romney team wins in a tight squeaker to become the next president over Clinton/Richardson.Oh wait, that was the prediction from a year ago. When it made much more sense. Seriously y'all would never have expected all this coming a million years ago?A senator with no experience who's middle name is Hussein? Joe Biden? Sarah who? McCain? If you'd have told me all that a year ago I would have laughed out loud at you and so here we are.So what's going to happen tomorrow night? Possibly what everyone expects, an Obama victory. Or, just like normal for this election year, the ...
Barack Obama, while campaigning today in Jacksonville, Florida, lost his bearings for a second, or perhaps had an out-of-body experience: (From Miami Herald) Obama had a small gaffe of his own in his 30-minute Jacksonville speech, when he departed from his script to bash McCain for bashing him on negative TV ads ''here in Ohio.'' The crowd quickly let him know he was in the wrong battleground state. ''Florida,'' Obama said, recovering. ''I've been traveling too much.'' I'm running a pool on how long it takes the McCain campaign to build a web ad around the gaffe, to be played for free by every ...
Obama Reaches Voters Verily, while in repose there came upon mine eyes a darkness. And in its grip my mind was given to see upon the day of choosing, and lo I was able to tell what that day would bring upon us. It came to pass in the year two thousand and eight, there dwelt upon the land of America a great strife. The peoples of the earth mingled freely in this land, but were sore afraid. They wandered in fear of a recurrence of the great soup times of many years gone. They believed the oceans themselves awaited their fate on the day of choosing, when the tide would know whether to rise or ...
This isn't a good sign if you're rooting for John McCain. Via Ben Smith:In one of Florida's largest and perhaps most politically important areas, only about 1,000 people stood outside the Bucaneers stadium to greet the GOP nominee. As Adam Smith noted, it was 1/15th of the crowd President Bush had four years ago in the same city. On his last swing through Tampa on October 20, Obama drew a crowd of 8,000. Since then, interest in the race has become more heightened. As I mentioned last night, Obama rallied 200,000 people yesterday in Ohio. Today he's here in Jacksonville, Florida, where the ...
