Olympics Choreographer Says His Crayon Paintings Reveal Faces From 'Another Dimension'

It's the goal of every artist to have people view their paintings, but what happens when the paintings start watching you? It sounds bizarre, but crayon artist Doug Jack says that for the past few months, mysterious faces have been showing up in his paintings and staring at him. The faces aren't intentional. Jack says they pop up inexplicably in his works, which he creates by melting crayons on pieces of glass with a torch using MAPP gas and a lazy Susan. ...

Is Charlie Sheen's World Record-Setting Twitter Presence an Elaborate Stunt?

Charlie Sheen now has some 1 million followers on Twitter, and that has at least one PR expert wondering if his meltdown is actually a PR stunt. A spokesperson for Guinness World Records confirms that Sheen set a world record recently for being the quickest person to gain 1 million followers, doing so in 25 hours, 17 minutes. However, the timing of Sheen's debut on Twitter is so perfect that PR expert Peter Shankman wonders if Sheen actually planned this whole thing in advance. TwitPic A PR expert wonders if the recent antics of Charlie Sheen, pictured here with Rachel Oberlin, ...

George Clooney and His Emmy: Not Just a Pretty Face

George Clooney and His Emmy: Not Just a Pretty Face

Among the glitz and glamour of the Emmys Sunday night, the highlight for me was George Clooney's intelligent acceptance speech for his humanitarian award. Named after Bob Hope, who brought comic relief to American troops in wartime, the award honors those who harness the power of television to do good. Clooney, not just a pretty face, has used both television and stardom to bring attention and raise money for victims around the world, from Darfur to Haiti. A self-effacing kind of movie star, Clooney hardly basked in the accolades. Instead, he took the opportunity during the Emmys to remind ...

Newcomers Dominate Podium at Emmy Awards

(Aug. 29) -- Newcomers ruled the early part of the 62nd Annual Primetime Emmys. 'Modern Family' took home Best Comedy after its debut season, ending a multi-year run for '30 Rock.' 'The Closer' star Kyra Sedgwick stunned prognosticators by winning her first Emmy for Best Actress in a Drama, beating out frontrunner Julianna Margulies ('The Good Wife') and previous winner Glenn Close ('Damages'). Though Margulies lost, her co-star Archie Panjabi became another first-time winner in the Supporting Drama Actress category. She was joined by 'Breaking Bad' star Aaron Paul, who won his first Emmy ...

Emmys: 'Mad Men' and 'Modern Family' Score; 'The Good Wife' Is Snubbed

In a turnaround from the usually predictable and cravenly self-serving award shows, the 62nd Emmy Awards on Sunday night in Los Angeles pulled off a few surprises in drama and comedy. On an evening of bland jokes and snail pace, the serial winner and critic favorite "Mad Men" repeated as best drama, elbowing out the acclaimed new hit "The Good Wife," and a new breakthrough comedy, "Modern Family,'' overcame the Tina Fey steamroller "30 Rock" for best comedy. One of the evening's big surprise winners was frequent Emmy drama nominee Kyra Sedgwick, whose leading role as Deputy Chief Brenda Lee ...

Emmy Nods Filled With 'Glee,' War and 'Family'

(July 8) -- A group of high school singers, a loose band of World War II soldiers and a talk show that no longer exists were among the biggest winners of this year's Emmy nominations. 'Glee,' the FOX musical-comedy about spunky teens, raked in 19 bids, including best comedy series and acting nods for stars Lea Michele, Matthew Morrison, Jane Lynch and Chris Colfer. HBO's war drama 'The Pacific' leads all nominees with an astounding 24 nominations, despite mixed reviews for the series. ...

This Year's Emmy Winner: Actresses With Curves

This Year's Emmy Winner: Actresses With Curves

Was anyone but me shallow enough to notice that of the eight Emmy photos of women in the New York Times Monday morning, four didn't look anorexic or even real thin? (Not counting the pregnant Heidi Klum because pregnant doesn't count.) If you figure in Tina Fey, whose arms appear to have a bit of meat on them, only three of the women had "the look." You know, the beautiful head on the scarily skinny body? Is normal back? Is "head on a stick" no longer the only acceptable silhouette? Naaaah. It was probably a fluke. For those who didn't see the print version of the paper, front-page ...

Why 'Mad Men' Beats 'Dancing With the Stars'

Why 'Mad Men' Beats 'Dancing With the Stars'

While switching from the 61st Annual Primetime Emmy Awards Sunday night to catch the latest episode of "Mad Men" (more on that elsewhere in WomanUp), I finally conceded reluctantly that the new kid on the block -- the entertainment concept Americans have referred to as "reality TV," which we stole nine years ago from the Swedes -- is on our not-so-small-screen to stay. ...
