Click here to visit the new home of Politics Daily! If success breeds contempt, then bloggers are finally making it big. Consider this study in contrasts: During his first White House news conference last year, President Barack Obama called on a liberal blogger, Sam Stein, and CNN recently hired conservative blogger Erick Erickson to provide on-air commentary. On the other hand, despite such inroads, "bloggers" in general have increasingly become scapegoats and bogeymen for the mainstream press and politicians. For example, while praising print media last year, Obama juxtaposed the traditional media with the New Media by voicing reservations ...
There's a hole in the bottom of the ocean. Unemployment is still near 10 percent. There are two wars underway. And what are conservative pundits fretting about? That this year President Obama won't be laying a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Arlington National Cemetery on Memorial Day. The liberal watchdog outfit, Media Matters, has been keeping track of this latest right-wing meme: - Glenn Beck says, "Obama is skipping out on a Memorial Day ceremony at Arlington Cemetery because he'll be in Chicago on vacation. I'm sorry, I don't ever, ever question the president's vacation. I ...
Maybe I fell asleep that day in Sunday school. Politico and Crooks and Liars note that Redstate Chief Erick Erickson sees divinity in conservative radio host Rush Limbaugh: Peter, under pressure and fear, denied Christ not just once, but three times. Peter, though, feared death. The strain on Peter was great. The rest of us, though, typically fear the opinions of others. There are those who like it when we feel guilty for associating with someone. More troubling, in the conservative movement and in the greater right-of-center coalition, there are many, many fellow traveler who would rather ...
There has long been tension between Republican leaders and movement conservatives, but efforts to elect Republicans in 2010 are doing nothing to bring the sides together. When Senator Arlen Specter switched parties, several prominent Republican leaders immediately urged Governor Tom Ridge, a Republican moderate, to run. It seems they weren't content to support the more conservative former Congressman Pat Toomey -- who was already in the race. Even now, many Republicans are searching for a moderate who is capable of winning the primary. Despite polling that shows him competitive -- and the fact ...
It was probably inevitable that Republicans would have to settle their ideological fights before returning to power, and Arlen Specter's defection seems to have been the spark that finally ignited this explosion of disagreements.Politico has a piece up today regarding how Republicans are feuding over Specter. They mention Senators such as Orrin Hatch, George Voinovich and Lindsey Graham who are angry at conservative groups like the Club for Growth, as well as others like RNC Michael Steele and Karl Rove who -- correctly (in my view) -- are blaming Specter for Specter's actions. But while top ...
Will liberals crash conservatives' tax-day tea parties? (03:58) Bill: Most protests don't achieve their goal (06:07) RedState declares war on Virginia GOP chairman (06:02) New political pragmatism from the online right? You've got to hand it to RedState's Erick Erickson for having the courage of his convictions -- something sorely lacking in too many Republicans these days.Conservative bloggers are by nature competitors, but we also are allies working toward the same goal (in fact, Erick and I both recently participated in a New Media panel for a conservative organization). As such, it's important to give credit where credit is due, and Erickson deserves credit for moving RedState toward becoming the premier conservative "activist" blog (as opposed to merely an opinion blog) -- as well as for having the guts ...
Update: Saltsman has withdrawn from the race for RNC chair.About a month ago, candidate for RNC chair Chip Saltsman made news by defending his gift to fellow GOPers of a CD containing a song called "Barack the Magic Negro." In several articles, I denounced the CD. I also made repeated reference to an even more offensive song from the same CD:I didn't want to do this, but the response from the RNC, so far, has been a denunciation of Saltsman from a strategic standpoint, and a defense of him. None of them think there's anything wrong with the CD itself. So, here are just 2 of the 41 songs on ...
I'm not just talking about the way their mere existence discourages arousal, but their broader legislative assault on hot, vigorous lovemaking. In the battle over the current stimulus package, they happen to be right. Sort of. Along with a measure to help states fund contraception for low-income families, a measure to fund prevention of STD's is being targeted by conservatives. From Sadly, No:(abridged) It looks like our virgin friends at Red State are upset because the stimulus package contains money to help states maintain their spending rates on public health programs. Most galling is the ...
As President-elect Barack Obama stands to take the oath of office today, some conservative commentators and pundits are lending their voices to a chorus of opposition against his policies. While the nation has been mostly caught up in a paroxysm of elation at the coming of a new administration, these opinionators are not reveling. Rather, they are exercising their time-honored and sacred right to dissent.Conservative radio host Rush Limbaugh says that the new president is entitlted to exactly the same reception from conservatives that liberals greeted President George W. Bush with in ...
