As I write, the future of the so-called public option for health care coverage hangs in the balance. The bipartisan health plan reportedly favored by the Senate Finance Committee lacks a government insurance option. Meanwhile, House Democratic leaders drew upon a new congressional report yesterday to rebut Republican claims that a public health insurance plan would drive private insurers out of business. Where we're headed is anyone's guess. All we know for sure is that -- according to Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi -- we're on track to vote on the bill "now . . . or whenever." ...
As if Pat Burrell didn't do enough damage at Shea Stadium over his career ... now the Mets and the rest of the National League may have to deal with Pat Burrell with better eyesight, as he's been fitted with corrective lenses. But Burrell, who has 291 strikeouts over the past two seasons, isn't convinced he needs them. "I could understand if I went to them and said, 'I'm not seeing anything,'" Burrell said. "I never complained. This guy gave me a screening and said, 'You need to come in.' I said I'll try them. They don't help." Burrell contends that his vision is fine, and he may be right. ...
