Obama's Claim on U.S. Guns in Mexico Debunked

In Mexico this week, President Barack Obama made remarks about the drug war being waged on the U.S. southern border, and cited statistics about the origin of guns used by drug runners in Mexico. The president claimed that 90 percent of firearms recovered by the Mexican police in drug related arrests are provided by dealers in the United States. But FactCheck.org did an analysis of the president's claim, and found that it is way off the mark, by at least a factor of two."There's no dispute that thousands of handguns, military style rifles and other firearms are purchased in the U.S. and end up ...

Fact-Check: McCain's 'Dishonorable' Ad

Fact-Check: McCain's 'Dishonorable' Ad

Via Factcheck.org, we are confronted with yet another bogus ad from John McCain. The irony here, is that the ad, titled "Dangerous", accuses Obama of being "dishonorable" while using utterly dishonorable tactics to prove its point. The evidence McCain uses to back up his claim is the following quote from 2007 about the situation in Afghanistan:We've got to get the job done there and that requires us to have enough troops so that we're not just air-raiding villages and killing civilians, which is causing enormous problems there.Since that time, of course, the United States has followed Obama's ...

Obama's Health Care Claim Debunked

For the third consecutive day, the Obama campaign has been called out for distorting Sen. John McCain's position on an issue for political gain. Earlier this week, Factcheck.org called Sen. Obama's claim that McCain's support for private accounts within Social Security would have cost current retirees their savings, "untrue." McClatchy newspapers called Sen. Obama's attempt to tie McCain's historic support for deregulation to the financial turmoil on Wall Street, "wrong." Now, Factcheck.org returns to call Sen. Obama's most recent campaign advertisement on the Wall Street situation, ...

Obama's Social Security Claim Debunked

Campaigning in Florida on Saturday, Sen. Barack Obama attempted to capitalize on last week's turmoil on Wall Street to take a shot at Sen. John McCain's plan for reforming Social Security. Obama told the assembled crowd in the senior citizen rich state that under McCain's plan for Social Security, senior citizens would have lost their benefits as a result of the troubled investment market."I'll protect Social Security, while John McCain wants to privatize it. Without Social Security half of elderly women would be living in poverty - half. But if my opponent had his way, the millions of ...

The Evil of Two Lessers

By  David Knowles - Politics Daily
The Evil of Two Lessers

With every passing election, Americans reaffirm a basic truth about the inherent nature of those who seek higher office: politicians lie to get elected. In fact, it is something of a bedrock assumption that to rise in the ranks of the politically powerful, one must, by definition, be untrustworthy. Hence the dictum: Power corrupts. Absolute power corrupts absolutely. Indeed, the race for president might be viewed as a competition to see who can tell the more convincing lies about his or her opponent. This might come as crushing news to idealistic followers of Barack Obama or John McCain (and, ...

Obama Attacks HRC for His Own Lies

By  Greg McNeilly - Politics Daily
Obama Attacks HRC for His Own Lies

In Pennsylvania, Barack Obama is airing a radio ad (script after the jump) that attacks Hillary Clinton. He again asserts that he is the only: "candidate who doesn't take a dime from oil company PACs or lobbyists. The only one. The Obama brand is busted. He's parsing and attacking like the career politician. Factcheck.org has already demonstrated the misleading nature of this claim. He's raked in campaign cash from oil executives. This nonpartisan group reports that Obama got $213,000 from folks who work for oil companies, and top executives have raised him between $50,000 and 100,000 for his ...
