FEC Increases Political Contribution Limits for 2012

Adjusting for inflation, the Federal Election Commission has increased the amount donors can give to federal candidates during the 2012 campaign cycle. Individuals may now write checks of up to $2,500 to candidates for president, the U.S. Senate and the U.S. House of Representatives. That's up $100 from last year's midterm elections. In addition, individuals may donate $30,800 annually to national party committees -- up about $400. An individual's total contribution to all federal campaigns, parties and other political committees combined may not exceed $117,000 between Jan.1, 2011 and Dec. ...

Opinion: Citizens United 1 Year Later -- Unleash the Corruption

Last month it was reported that incoming Sen. Ron Johnson, R-Wis., "paid a personal visit" to Tom Donohue, the president of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, "to thank him for the chamber's unsolicited support of his candidacy." Apparently the senator did not get the memo that all genuflecting before campaign funders should be conducted behind closed doors. Johnson's visit comes courtesy of the U.S. Supreme Court decision one year ago today in Citizens United v. FEC, which opened the floodgates by allowing for the first time the vast reservoirs of corporate and union treasury funds to swamp ...

Christine O'Donnell to Resubmit Campaign Funds Records

A lawyer for Christine O'Donnell has informed federal officials that the failed Delaware Senate candidate will resubmit financial records for her 2009-10 campaign. O'Donnell, whose campaign finances are the subject of a Justice Department investigation, will refile the paperwork later this month after a comprehensive review, attorney Cleta Mitchell told the Federal Election Commission in a Dec. 21 letter, The Wall Street Journal reported. The Republican is accused of illegally using campaign funds for personal expenses, including meals and rent on her home. Mitchell wrote that the campaign ...

Feds Probe Christine O'Donnell's Campaign Spending

BALTIMORE -- Federal authorities have opened a criminal investigation of Delaware Republican Christine O'Donnell to determine if the former Senate candidate broke the law by using campaign money to pay personal expenses, according to a person with knowledge of the investigation. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity to protect the identity of a client who has been questioned as part of the probe. The case, which has been assigned to two federal prosecutors and two FBI agents in Delaware, has not been brought before a grand jury. O'Donnell, who set a state record ...

Sarah Palin's Signed Books -- at $100 a Pop -- Help Fund Her PAC

Sarah Palin continues to mix merchandising with politics, selling signed copies of her new book, via the Internet, in exchange for $100 donations to her political action committee. Her latest Sarah PAC filing with the Federal Election Commission shows the committee paid publisher Harper Collins $68,717 for books and shipping. "America By Heart" came out Nov. 23 and retails for $25.99, though 500 lucky folks paid $15.88 for signed copies at Sam's Club in Little Rock, Ark., on Tuesday. Other than fans who wait in line at Palin book signings, most everyone else who wants a signed copy will have ...

U.S. Debt Could Be Cut by Sending Leftover Campaign Cash to Uncle Sam

U.S. Debt Could Be Cut by Sending Leftover Campaign Cash to Uncle Sam

While senators and House members look for ways to tackle, if not tame, the gargantuan federal debt, they might look directly in the mirror for one source of available money. A principal criticism of American politics today is that there are too many dollars bankrolling the electoral system, making many races for public office overly expensive. Ironically, at the same time campaigns are awash with cash, the federal government is drowning in a sea of red ink. How, you ask, could the political situation help the governmental one? It's not that difficult. If you study the financial reports ...

Sarah Palin's PAC Gave $87,500 to Candidates

JUNEAU, Alaska (July 11) - Sarah Palin's political action committee contributed at least $87,500 to candidates she's endorsed in the last few months, according to a report filed Sunday with the Federal Elections Commission. But SarahPAC's financial disclosure also shows Palin spending more than $210,000 on consulting. Candidates receiving money from Palin for the period covering April 1 to June 30 include former Gov. Terry Branstad, who won last month's Republican gubernatorial primary in Iowa, and Joe Miller, who's challenging Alaska U.S. Sen. Lisa Murkowski in the August GOP primary. Each ...
