Flying Car En Route to American Roads and Skies

(June 30) -- Why drive a hybrid when you can soar over traffic in a flybrid? A flying car called the Terrafugia Transition could be on its way to American roads and skies. Equipped with a rear propeller engine, front-wheel drive, airbags and crumple zones, the Transition is as at home in the air as it is on asphalt, according to its makers. The prototype can fly as far as 460 miles at a top speed of about 115 mph and only needs a 2,500-foot runway for takeoff and landing. Once on the ground, pilots can press a button to fold up the wings, making the vehicle street-ready and stowable in a ...

Senate Sets Aside Rancor to Pass Aviation Bill

WASHINGTON (March 24) -- It was Monday night, and Capitol Hill was consumed with partisan acrimony. A day earlier, a deeply divided House of Representatives had narrowly approved the president's signature health care overhaul. Republicans were declaring war. Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., told a radio station that there would be "no cooperation" with Democrats for the rest of the year. It seemed, then, the unlikeliest of times for the Senate to approve a major piece of legislation -- unanimously. But that's exactly what happened Monday, when 93 senators advanced a $35 billion aviation bill that ...

The crash was reported at 3:45 p.m. at Monmouth Executive Airport, about 35 miles east of Trenton, said Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Jim Peters. The weather was overcast, but no precipitation was falling. Capt. Tim Clayton of the Wall Township police said debris from the crash was scattered over a 200-foot stretch of snowy ground. ...

FAA Seminar Draws Wrong Kind of Attention

(Dec. 22) -- As Americans continue to simmer over Wall Street's manhandling of the economy, many of the embattled banks are wisely forgoing annual holiday parties this year. But the federal government may have missed the memo about keeping a low profile. An undercover ABC News report suggests the Federal Aviation Administration slipped in a three-week holiday boondoggle disguised as a managers meeting earlier this month. The conference cost $5 million and brought 3,600 managers to Atlanta where undercover cameras caught the employees boozing at night. "Anytime you get a bunch of FAA guys ...

FAA to Push for Stricter Requirements for Pilot Licenses

The head of the Federal Aviation Administration told a Senate panel Thursday he wants new rules aimed at enhancing pilot training and preventing pilots from flying when they're too tired. FAA Administrator Randy Babbitt said his agency hopes to create a new category of commercial pilot licenses for beginning pilots, the Wall Street Journal reported. Under the proposed changes, pilots would need more than the roughly 250 hours of flying time currently required, as well as extra training in a variety of conditions. Babbitt said he's against mandating all airline pilots have at least 1,500 hours ...
