Former first lady Laura Bush finally opens up in her still-embargoed memoir about the tragic automobile accident she was involved in when she was 17. The deadly 1963 crash, at a poorly lit Midland, Texas, intersection, is a subject the former first lady rarely, if ever, talked about during eight years in the White House. As my WomanUp colleague Sarah Wildman notes, the accident "always seemed a bruise she avoided touching, a wound that had never closed." Driving her father's Chevy Impala, Laura ran a stop sign and smashed into the car of Mike Douglas, killing the star athlete who was her high ...
WASHINGTON (Feb. 21) - Michelle Obama wears blinders, of sorts. That helps her to see the real America. As the first lady put it in an interview Saturday, the people she's met and the causes she's taken up have put her in touch with a side of the country far removed from the tempest of attack politics and nasty commentary, which she tries her best to shut out. "Most of America isn't like that and they're tired of that," she said. "You know, they want folks to get stuff done. The beauty of my job is that I get to see more of that America. And that feeds me." Her remark in the 2008 campaign ...
(Jan. 6) -- The first lady's office thinks the latest anti-fur ad from People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals is far from fabulous. PETA has rolled out a campaign in the Washington area that features photos of Michelle Obama, Carrie Underwood, Oprah Winfrey and Tyra Banks on a poster that declares them "Fur-Free and Fabulous!" The image is also plastered on a van that cruises around the city. PETA/AP The White House didn't authorize the use of Michelle Obama's photo in this PETA ad. "We did not consent to it," the first lady's spokeswoman, Semonti Stephens, said in a terse statement. ...
The latest Rasmussen poll shows First Lady Michelle Obama is ending 2009 with a dip in her favorability ratings. Fifty-five percent of voters have at least a somewhat favorable view of Mrs. Obama in the December survey, down from 62 percent the month before. Mrs. Obama's previous favorables ranged from 58 percent to 67 percent. This is her lowest point since monthly polling on Mrs. Obama began in March, Rasmussen reports. However, Mrs. Obama's polling is still well ahead of President Obama's numbers. He winds up the year with some of his lowest marks to date. Why the drop for the first lady? ...
(Dec. 18) -- First Lady Michelle Obama on Wednesday visited a Marine Corps Toys for Tots distribution center outside of Washington, toured the warehouse, thanked the volunteers, and dropped off toys donated by White House staffers and the Obamas. "It's Christmas, and we brought toys," she said. "We wish everybody a happy holidays, a Merry Christmas, a Happy Hanukkah, everybody out there who's celebrating anything: Happy." She spent 15 minutes there and less than an hour later was back home at the White House, with First Dog Bo bounding over from the South Lawn to greet her with an ...
Speaking of wise eating, Michelle, Sunday's New York Times magazine was full of advice on this issue, and the response in the blogosphere was not all friendly. In fact, it tended toward either extreme, kind of the way our American eating habits (binge/starve; fast food/slow food; cook everything/cook nothing) are portrayed. People seemed to either swoon over every single word that was printed, or to reject its preachy tone and continuous nudging toward home cooking as an answer to our bad eating habits and copious health ills. I didn't find the issue to be especially provocative, though ...
First lady Michelle Obama is in Russia this week, but Russians don't want to talk about what she thinks of living in the White House. They show no interest in her views on philandering politicians. And -- thank God -- no one has even broached the subject of sleeveless dresses in her wardrobe. What they do want to talk about, The Washington Post's Robin Givhan reports, is her gardening, specifically, for food. Household food gardens are a mainstay for Russian families, but Americans have relied on them less. The Christian Science Monitor recently noted that in urban areas of Russia alone, 56 ...
