Florida elections

Florida

The Sunshine State, a constant source of political drama, is living up to its reputation in this midterm election.Gov. Charlie Crist shook up the Senate race in May when he abandoned the GOP and decided to run as an independent. At the time, he was far behind tea party favorite Marco Rubio in the race for the Republican nomination, but Crist's poll numbers rose after his declaration of independence. Rep. Kendrick Meek fought off a primary challenge from self-funded billionaire Jeff Greene to win the Democratic nomination. The contenders to replace Crist as governor are Democratic insider Alex Sink, who is Florida's chief financial officer, and renegade Republican newcomer Rick Scott. The health care industry mogul spent about $50 million of his own money during the primary to defeat Bill McCollum, who had the support of the entire Republican establishment. The GOP is targeting House seats held by two freshman Democrats, Alan Grayson in the 8th District and Suzanne Kosmas in the 24th. Obama won Florida in 2008.
