Click here to visit the new home of Politics Daily! It sounds like the stuff of horror movies -- placing a body in a steel tube and then covering it with a mixture of water and acid until most of the remains are liquefied. But it's actually a scientific process called alkaline hydrolysis that is on track toward becoming an alternative to cremation in California. Lawmakers are unanimously supporting a bill that would legalize the procedure with heavy oversight at mortuaries and funeral homes. Last year Florida passed a similar law, but no business has a license to perform the procedure. California Assemblyman Jeff Miller sponsored the bill ...
WASHINGTON -- The Supreme Court rejected a call Monday from Virginia's attorney general to depart from its usual practice and put review of the health care law on a fast track. Instead, judicial review of President Barack Obama's signature legislation will continue in federal appeals courts. The justices turned down a request by Virginia Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli, a leading opponent of the law, to resolve questions about its constitutionality quickly. The Obama administration opposed Cuccinelli's plea. Only rarely, in wartime or a constitutional crisis, does the court step into a legal ...
It's the state of butterfly ballots, gator farms and oversized mice. It's the retirement hub discovered by a Spaniard rumored to have lost his life hunting for the legendary Fountain of Youth. It's the only place in America where the farther north you go, the farther south you get. Florida is undeniably a quirky place. But among many journalists and news junkies, the Sunshine State has developed a reputation for being the state that generates the most weird news and the weirdest weird news. How did a state once famous for its oranges and seniors turn into a hub for all things ...
One man died and three were rescued when their fishing boat capsized off the coast of Tarpon Springs, Fla., on Saturday. Fifteen-year-old Dustin Bush, the youngest of the group, helped save two of the men and tried desperately to keep the third, 55-year-old Rick Green, from drowning. According to authorities, the four anglers from the Gulf Harbors Fishing Club had gone for a fishing trip in the Gulf of Mexico on a 22-foot fishing boat at 7 a.m. That afternoon, they were about 11 miles off shore when water conditions began to get choppy and they decided to head back. However their motor ...

On the video, obtained by WABC Orlando, a loud blast can be heard when the security guard appears to shoot one of the gunmen in the back as he attempts to flee. The customers and the security guard were unharmed. The suspect crawled to a waiting getaway car but was later ...
A school bus driver in Florida was arrested for allegedly mixing the classic kids tunes "99 Bottles of Beer" and "The Wheels on the Bus." Police in Lee County say they cuffed 46-year-old Lane Tripp for drunken driving while she headed to work on April 15. Lee County Sheriff's Office Deputies say Lane Tripp's blood-alcohol level was more than three times the legal limit when she was pulled over -- just before her afternoon shift as a school bus driver. An off-duty sheriff's deputy reportedly saw Tripp's car swerving through traffic, so the cop tipped off uniformed police, WTSP ...
LAKELAND, Fla. -- A 2-year-old boy was accidentally served sangria instead of orange juice at a central Florida Olive Garden and was taken to the hospital. Jill VanHeest says she took her son Nikolai to the hospital after the incident. He was given fluids and released a couple hours later. He has suffered no lasting effects. VanHeest has an attorney but isn't sure whether she'll sue. VanHeest's attorney contacted the news ...
A series of videos that allegedly feature scantily clad women beating up homeless men in Florida has led to an investigation by local law enforcement and a lawsuit filed by the Southern Legal Counsel on behalf of the transient men. "We are investigating it," St. Petersburg police spokesman Mike Puetz told told AOL News. "Because it is an open investigation we can't comment a great deal ... but clearly they have videos of people being beaten up." According to Puetz, the videos are being offered for purchase on the website Shefights.net. An introductory message on the site's home page states ...
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- California's governor wants to maintain temporary tax increases to keep $9 billion a year flowing to the state treasury. Low-tax Texas is considering tapping its rainy day account to soften the effects of deep spending cuts. New York's governor pushed through budget cuts while keeping a campaign pledge to avoid tax increases. And residents of Illinois and Florida are getting a very different take on taxes: Illinois passed a massive increase, while Florida proposes giving its taxpayers a big break. The five states are the nation's most populous but are taking very ...
