First Abortion-Services TV Ad in U.K. Sparks Criticism, Debate

The first ad ever to offer advice on abortion services was screened on British television Monday night. In a country long known for its reserved demeanor, the ad has provoked vociferous praise and condemnation. Much like the Focus on the Family ad featuring Tim Tebow that aired in the United States during the Super Bowl this year, the so-called "abortion ad" is fairly ambiguous. The 30-second spot features a number of women from different walks of life who are "late." A voice-over then says that "Being late for a period could mean pregnancy. If you're pregnant and not sure what to do, Marie ...

Dobson's Successor Gives Mega-Ministry New Focus

COLORADO SPRINGS (April 24) -- Jim Daly is certain there is "a right way and a wrong way" to live one's life, and it's all about Jesus Christ and a literal reading of the Bible. But the new leader of the evangelical ministry Focus on the Family isn't going to get in your face if you disagree. At a time when the conservative movement is dominated by raucous tea party demonstrations for lower taxes and smaller government, Daly seems oddly disconnected. "Don't know much about it, to be honest with you," he said, even though a recent poll showed that many tea party supporters are social ...

Army Reconsidering Invite to Evangelical Minister

WASHINGTON (April 21) -- The Pentagon may pull the pulpit on evangelist Franklin Graham amid complaints by Muslim military personnel angry over his attacks on Islam as an "evil" religion. Graham, the son of famed minister Billy Graham, is scheduled to speak May 6 at a National Day of Prayer event organized by a Colorado group chaired by Shirley Dobson, wife of Focus on the Family founder James Dobson. But Army Secretary John McHugh and Chief of Staff Gen. George W. Casey Jr. were huddling at the Pentagon on Wednesday afternoon deciding whether to rescind the invitation. "The issue is not the ...

Sarah Palin, NOW Spar Over Tim Tebow's Super Bowl Ad

The National Organization for Women is firing back at Sarah Palin, who took issue with the group's opposition to a pro-life Super Bowl ad that will feature college football player Tim Tebow, Politico reports. NOW said that Palin, who defended the Focus on the Family-sponsored ad and urged CBS not to "cave" to pressures to pull it, was "missing our point." The 30-second spot will feature Tebow and his mother, Pam, telling the story of her decision not to end her difficult pregnancy with the future Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback in 1987. Tebow has said his mother's courage often persuades ...

James Dobson Retires to Focus on His Own Damn Family

The Rev. James C. Dobson has selflessly given three decades of his focus to your family, intimate behavior and sex life. But one man can only enjoy so much voyeurism. And thus Dobson has resigned as chairman of Focus on the Family, the Colorado Springs ministry he founded to keep the gays out of right-wing radio... James Dobson is stepping down as chairman of Focus on the Family, the conservative religious group announced Friday -- a change that comes as the political movement Dobson has long embodied has been torn by questions over its direction and priorities.Dobson, 72, will continue to ...
