The 200 farmers, mostly from northeastern Japan, wore green bandanas, held aloft cabbages they said they couldn't sell and carried signs saying "Stop nuclear energy" outside the headquarters of Tokyo Electric Power Co., the operator of the plant damaged in the March 11 tsunami. "My patience has run out. The nuclear crisis is totally destroying our farming business," said ...
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - An Alabama-based law firm said Monday it has withdrawn its class-action lawsuit that sought to force Taco Bell to stop calling the meat it serves "beef." The lawsuit, filed in January in federal court in California, alleged that what Taco Bell calls "seasoned beef" is a meat mixture that has binders and extenders and does not meet federal requirements to be labeled beef. The fast-food chain said Monday the lawsuit was voluntarily withdrawn by the firm. It said no money was exchanged and it is not changing any of its products or advertising. "This sets the record straight ...
DEN BOSCH, Netherlands -- Farming is moving indoors, where the sun never shines, where rainfall is irrelevant and where the climate is always right. The perfect crop field could be inside a windowless building with meticulously controlled light, temperature, humidity, air quality and nutrition. It could be in a New York high-rise, a Siberian bunker, or a sprawling complex in the Saudi desert. Advocates say this, or something like it, may be an answer to the world's food problems. "In order to keep a planet that's worth living on, we have to change our methods," says Gertjan Meeuws, of ...
Two or three times almost every week, the federal Food and Drug Administration warns that something in the vegetable bins, produce displays or coolers in our groceries may be so contaminated with dangerous pathogens that shoppers shouldn't buy it, nor eat it if they did. So how does the consumer keep up with what's being sold -- products that can sicken or even kill you? This week, the FDA released a new, user-friendly search page for consumers who have any concerns about a recall. Its easy-to-read listing organizes information from news releases on recalls since 2009 by date, product brand ...
ST. LOUIS -- U.S. farmers are expected to boost the size of this year's corn crop, potentially easing global food inflation. The Agriculture Department reports that farmers intend to plant 92.2 million acres of corn this spring, a 5 percent increase over last year. That would make it the second-biggest corn crop since 1944, after a record-setting planting in 2007. Grain prices are at their highest levels since the food crisis of 2008. New production will help ease concerns over a supply pinch. Worries over a shortage have doubled the price of corn since last summer, from $3.50 to more than ...
Artificial food dyes that enhance the color of processed, kid-friendly foods like Cheetos and Pop-Tarts have been used for decades, and the Food and Drug Administration has said they're safe. But with some studies tying the colorings to hyperactivity in children, an FDA panel begins two days of hearings today to review the research and decide whether more study is needed or whether foods with the dyes should carry warning labels. Before the hearing, FDA scientists said in a report that there was no definitive proof that food dye causes hyperactivity in most children, though kids with ...

COVINGTON, Ky. -- Firefighters rigged a precarious gangplank of ladders and ropes and safely rescued 83 people, including former Cincinnati Bengals star Cris Collinsworth, from a floating restaurant that broke free from a pier on the flood Ohio River, authorities say. Covington Fire Department Capt. Chris Kiely said Jeff Ruby's Waterfront restaurant drifted about 85 to 100 yards down the fast, rain-swollen river during the late Friday evening dinner hour and the popular seafood eatery then came to a stop beside a tall bridge as skittish dinner patrons looked on. He said 83 people were safely ...
Hard-fought-for laws and regulations to save lives and the environment will be gutted or eliminated in budget cuts passed by the Republican-controlled U.S. House of Representatives or ordered by President Barack Obama's team, experts say. Public health and environmental experts say it's indisputable that lives will be lost if these cuts are made: 1) The Consumer Product Safety Commission. The commission is scheduled next week to roll out its long-awaited public database on the safety of consumer products. For the first time, it will allow shoppers to quickly determine whether products they ...
