Voters Back Ratification of Nuclear Arms Treaty With Russia

Voters Back Ratification of Nuclear Arms Treaty With Russia

Voters have mixed views of President Barack Obama's recent initiatives to reduce nuclear arsenals, limit the situations in which the United States would use its weapons, and prevent terrorists from getting them. But, a solid majority does support ratification of the arms reduction treaty just signed with Moscow, according to a Quinnipiac University poll conducted April 14-19. Aside from support for the treaty, voters are clearly skeptical about the impact of Obama's policies. Forty-seven percent say they will not make a difference in increasing or decreasing the threat of nuclear weapons, 25 ...

Conservatives Skip Obama's National Security Successes at CPAC

Conservatives Skip Obama's National Security Successes at CPAC

When Liz Cheney addressed the Conservative Political Action Conference on Thursday, she took President Barack Obama to task for what she said has been a dangerously misguided and ineffective approach to national security. "We've learned he wants to go around the world and apologize for this great country of ours," she said. "We've learned he wants to give rights to terrorists, including the right to remain silent. We've learned he wants to move dangerous terrorists from Guantanamo onto the American homeland while he investigates and possibly prosecutes the CIA officers who interrogated them. ...

China Executes British Drug Smuggler Despite Outcry

A 53-year-old British man convicted of drug smuggling was executed in China early Tuesday, despite pleas for clemency from his family, human rights groups, and British Prime Minister Gordon Brown, the New York Times reports. According to family members, Akmal Shaikh had a history of mental illness before he was caught carrying a suitcase containing 8.3 pounds of heroin into China in 2007. "I condemn the execution of Akmal Shaikh in the strongest terms and am appalled and disappointed that our persistent requests for clemency have not been granted," Brown said in a statement. "I am ...

Russian Prime Minister Putin Dominates Four-Hour Forum, Hints at Political Future

During a virtuoso performance at a lengthy public forum in Moscow Thursday, Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin said he would "think about" another run for president, the New York Times reports. Asked whether he should take a break after his years of public service, Putin told the questioner, "don't hold your breath." The forum, which lasted over four hours and included over 90 questions from Russian citizens, made clear that Putin is Russia's strongest leader, despite President Dmitri Medvedev holding the more powerful office. There has been much speculation in the United States that the ...

German Magazine Says Obama 'Nice Guy Act' Is Failing on World Stage

German Magazine Says Obama 'Nice Guy Act' Is Failing on World Stage

An article in the German newsweekly Der Spiegel ("The Mirror") reviews President Obama's recent trip to Asia and concludes that the tone of his foreign policy, which the magazine calls his "nice guy act," is proving ineffective on the world state. Japan pulled out of its agreement to assist with refueling U.S. warships bound for Afghanistan, China made no concessions whatsoever, and Israel has dictated the terms under which it will particpate in peace talks. "Upon taking office, Obama said that he wanted to listen to the world, promising respect instead of arrogance," Spiegel writes. "But ...

Liz Cheney Starts Group to Oppose Obama's 'Radical' Foreign Policy

Less than a week after her sister Mary announced the launch of a private consulting firm, Liz Cheney, daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney, says she is starting a group to oppose the Obama administration's foreign policy. Politico reported Tuesday that the group, Keep America Safe, will oppose what it calls the administration's "radical" effort to move away from Bush-era foreign policy. "The policies being proposed by the Obama administration are so radical across the board," Cheney said. "Whether you're a Republican or a Democrat, you want the nation to be strong, and so many steps ...

Russia Praises Missile Shield Decision, Obama's 'Responsible Attitude'

The government of Russia is praising President Obama's decision to scrap a land-based missile-defense system in Eastern Europe, which the country had seen as a threat to its national security. The proposed shield had strained U.S.-Russian relations since President George W. Bush pushed for it at the end of his administration. But reaction in other Eastern European nations, including Poland and the Czech Republic, was mixed, as they had seen the shield as a layer of protection from future Russian aggression. ...

White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs, who earlier this week called Mahmoud Ahmadinejad the "elected leader" of Iran, was forced to correct his statement, saying that he did not mean to insinuate that the election in Iran was legitimate and fair. ...

Yanqui, Don't Go Home! Race, Gender, Oil and Honduras

Yanqui, Don't Go Home! Race, Gender, Oil and Honduras

Too bad we're fixated on Michael Jackson (not my thing) and Sarah Palin (mea culpa) because the power play taking place right now in little ole Honduras has a bit of everything, including the politics of race, gender, oil, democracy, and Yankee imperialism. Toss into our high-drama soap opera a Nobel Laureate, the human lightning rod known as Hillary Clinton, a martyred Honduran boy, and the first black president of the United States, and, well, the Honduras coup has something for everyone. ...
